"The Place Beyond the Pines" (Derek Cianfrance)

The Place Beyond the Pines, the newest film from Derek Cianfrance, the director of the extraordinary Blue Valentine, just premiered at TIFF and reviews seem to be solid. The movie stars Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes and Bradley Cooper.

Just read on a rival site that The Weinstein Company is moving aggressively toward a deal after making an offer on Derek Cianfrance’s The Place Beyond The Pines. Only problem, I’m told by sources inside The Weinstein Company, is that they haven’t made an offer. At least not yet. I’m told from the other side of the table that there are as many as six suitors that are really interested in this film and perhaps have made offers. Small wonder, with the cast of Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes. I was also told TWC isn’t on that list. At least not yet. That means the movie is still in play. The movie made an impression during yesterday’s screening, but buyers are mulling the usual issues. The one I keep hearing is, will Cianfrance cut a movie that is looong? This is arguably the acquisition title that came in with the most heat, and it will certainly sell. Maybe even to TWC. Probably before the weekend is over. But it may very well go to a place beyond the Weinsteins. Stay tuned.

The obvious comparison is drive with Gosling as a stunt driver that does crime on the side (or vice versa). But thats not a bad comparison at all as it was my favorite film of last year and I loved Blue Valentine. Can't wait for this.

Meh -- Drive was great, easily one of my favorites of the year. This looks like its just riding the coattails. Blue Valentine, while good, was vastly overrated.

By the way, "The Place Beyond the Pines" sounds like a working title...

Sorry, but I have to disagree about Blue Valentine being overrated. My favorite film of 2010 and it featured two of the best performances in recent memory. However, Blue Valentine seems a lot more personal to Cianfrance than this, as much of the plot came from his own fear of divorce when he was young, so it'll be interesting to see how he handles something like this. I don't really know how to address the Drive comparison, besides the fact that it's Gosling playing a similar character. But he was working with Cianfrance and Michelle Williams for about six years on Blue Valentine (prior to filming), so it's not a surprise that he chose him again to work with.
