Cool

10 THINGS I LIKE ABOUT DARK KNIGHT RISES
..... because masterchief shouldn't cry anymore

1. THE SCOPE
Nolan's Bat-Trilogy has been his growth as a technical filmmaker. Before Batman Begins, he was an Indie director making low-budget thrillers. Since then he has become the Hollywood version of Quentin Tarantino. In our current world of cinema where CGI-fests, 3D, and digital photography have become the norm, Nolan has faught to continue the old school approach. And so, TDKR is the film where Nolan has taken everything to the extreme while still remaining in the modern and realistic setting of his Batman universe. Every action sequence is a display of how Nolan has mastered big-budget filmmaking and it makes The Avengers look cartoon-ish by comparison.

2. BANE'S VOICE
As silly as it is, the voice amuses me. Sure, the obvious ADR is distracting, but I can live with it. I also find it humorous that his voice is so elegant and sophisticated even though he's this blunt force, and essentially, a glorified henchman.

3. CATWOMAN'S ASS
Anne Hathaway was a lot more attractive in her Princess Diaries era. Remember how excited we all were to see her topless in Havoc? These days, she has sadly lost too much weight. She looks borderline anorexic. As a result, I'd say she's the 4th best-looking Catwoman, behind Julie Newmar, Lee Meriweather, and Michelle P. And yet, with all this being said, whenever she was in her leather suit and we got to see her ass, it was glorious.

4. THE BATMAN & CATWOMAN SCENES
I've always been a HUGE fan of the flirtation between Batman and Catwoman. So, it's great that Nolan decided to include it in his trilogy. Although I'm still disappointed that "the romance" between them wasn't given any breathing room. But, oh well, I guess beggers can't be choosers. I'll take what I can get.

5. BATMAN VS. BANE
I've made a few complains revolving around this scene, but from a technical point-of-view, it is an amazing fight sequence. It was shot well. The exclusion of music was a smart choice. I loved the way Bane taunts Batman. And, most importantly, it featured "the breaking of the bat." In my first screening, that scene was met with silence. It must of been a combination of excitement and awe since it was all fanboys. In my second screening, with the general public, most people were in shock. They weren't expecting things to turn out that way. So, it was definitely an interesting experience and why I continue to champion seeing movies with an audience.

6. JOSPEH GORDON-LEVITT
I'm not too crazy about John Blake and the way he replaces Batman. However, I've been a fan of Gordon-Levitt since Angels in the Outfield. Okay... maybe "fan" is a strong word. But I've always enjoyed his performances and it's always fun seeing him in movies and TV shows. If Nolan had done things properly, Gordon-Levitt could have been a total badass in this film. Just think about how awesome he was in Inception.

7. MARION COTILLARD
Like Gordon-Levitt, she got screwed over by the screenplay, but I still liked what she had to offer. As I said on Friday, if Nolan had been forced to eliminate all the excessive characters, I would have chosen Cotillard over Hathaway's Catwoman. And that isn't easy for me to say considering how much I enjoyed Catwoman in this movie. But, Miranda Tate/Talia makes more sense for the story and Cotillard, unlike Hathaway, is better eye-candy.

8. THE PIT / UNDERGROUND PRISON
I don't know what the heck this place was called, but I liked the idea of Bruce Wayne having to climb his way towards freedom. It was a cool concept and resulted in, arguably, the most badass scene in the movie.

9. BATMAN VS. BANE, PART II
I like that this is an actual fight. Batman and Bane are going toe-to-toe and it's awesome. Extra kudos to Christian Bale and Tom Hardy for going all-out. There were certain parts where I'm pretty sure they hit each other for real.

10. THE ACTION SCENES
I pretty much loved all of them. They were epic and over-the-top. And at times, like some have said, they were very comic book-y. That rooftop fight with Batman and Catwoman gave the fanboy in me a lot to smile about.

So I was talking with a couple buddies last night reminiscing about DKR. We noticed how there is a growing number of people who felt very disappointed by it, but then we started to delve into ‘why.’ What made this movie such a step down from the rest? It had all the same stuff and people involved. Well I started into it and although this will rub some people the wrong way, I think we hit the nail on the head.

Dark Knight was huge when it came out, but two things went against Dark Knight Returns upon its release. One was the massive pedestal that it was put on by the fans (as I’ve discussed ad nauseum).

Second, and more importantly, was Heath Ledger. Why? Because his performance eclipsed just about everything else good and not so good about the movie. I’ve gone on record saying that his performance was really the only thing ‘great’ about Dark Knight, and because it was so hyped and so well received it was easier for fans to overlook or even refuse to acknowledge any of the flaws Dark Knight had. Why would they need to? Heath Ledger was great and so was Dark Knight, that’s all we need to know. Now fast forward to 2012. We have a sequel to this juggernaut of a summer blockbuster with expectations that no one could live up to, not even Chris Nolan (again, thanks fans!) but this time it’s without a strongly hyped performance. Sure it has good performances but none that have anywhere near the appeal of Joker. In fact, there wasn’t any one thing that people could gravitate around. Since we the audience aren’t mesmerized by any one singular element of DKR, it’s easier for everyone to notice its flaws, even those shared by Dark Knight like the muddled storyline, uneven script and corny action scenes and dialogue. Those don’t have anything to hide behind in DKR, they’re more noticeable even to the superfans. Those certainly don’t make it a bad movie, it just knocks it down from the plateau of perfection that Dark Knight rode so high on with a lot of people.

Third, Dark Knight wallowed in its ‘realistic, real world’ setting which people credited as a brilliant genre game changer. DKR took a step away from that and embraced more of a comic book, fantastical feel. Whether or not that was intentional I can’t say, but the people looking for that gritty realism had to expand their imaginations a little more. So combine that with the expectations that people surrounded DKR with and you are bound to have people be incredibly disappointed by a movie that is actually quite good. If it isn’t obvious by now, I’m defending Dark Knight Rises because I see or am anticipating the pendulum swinging the other way, almost like Avatar. Huge appeal at first glance then bam, people turn on it. This isn’t some huge travesty of a film, it’s not a disappointment and isn’t even that much further of a step down from Dark Knight. It’s a very enjoyable movie that has its flaws, as does every movie.

At least, that’s the theory we all came up with. I’m sure there are people who just legitimately didn’t enjoy the movie as were there people who legitimately had issue with Dark Knight, but I would bet that most of the people who were ‘hugely disappointed’ by DKR could fall into the above category. DKR is a comic book movie as was the Dark Knight, and once you can get away from the seriousness and can open your imagination, if you can watch it to ‘escape’ then you’ll enjoy it much more than you would by comparing it to other films and believing you were ‘owed’ something better. And with that, I think I’m going to go watch it again this weekend.

Interesting theory, and while it applies to some, I don't think it applies to Neverending or Justin. And I can say with certainty it doesn't apply to me.

Yeah certainly not everyone, but the fanboys would make up most of them.

I'm not disappointment in this movie. Not in the least. Could it have been cleaned up in some places? Yes. But I feel no disappointment other than it being over.

The Dark Knight Rises really couldn’t have been any bigger. Not just the crowds, but in the scope of the work, where Nolan involves global, topical subjects ranging from renewable energy to politics. But the big issue is not the topics themselves, but the way they’re spread so thin. Rises is an epic affair that leaves you little time to stop and think, it ultimately feels like you’ve barely had time to breathe. I acknowledge that most of my frustration stems from my dissatisfaction with the ending, but Rises somehow manages to encompass all of our modern day fears within its extensive running time (which just might have been too short). The Dark Knight Rises is many things: chaotic, messy, apocalyptic, choppy and colossal. Despite all of the problems, it remains entertaining and I think even those sorely disappointed—like myself—will find themselves re-watching it just for the sheer thrill of the ending of a landmark trilogy in the comic book world. It’s as flawed as it is daring.

It’s been 8 years since Batman last showed his face. During that time, Bruce Wayne has become a recluse. Now he lives in utter solitude, growing a beard and spending his time doing….well, who knows what. Wayne has retreated into a dark place, and has withdrawn from his life as Batman and is now Bruce Wayne full-time. Naturally, trouble is brewing in the sewers of Gotham. A man named Bane (Tom Hardy) is building an army. Bane is an illusive, masked character with a booming, strong English accent. He’s built like a tank, skilled in martial arts and very intelligent. He wants to create a new Gotham; one without the rich and corrupt and where the people run it. Catwoman makes her debut in the final act of the trilogy. Played surprisingly well by Anne Hathaway, it’s difficult to put a tap on her personality. She seems to play both sides of the field, sometimes selfishly. Joseph Gordon-Levitt makes his second appearance in a Nolan film—the first being Inception—and here he makes little impact, through no fault of his own.

One of the biggest issues with Rises is the pacing and chaotic first act. In a film that feels urgent and apocalyptic, it’s normal that it should feel this way, but to an extent. Nolan seems to have forgotten to help us along a little, so we’re not left in the dust wondering what’s going on. Characters are racing around, Bruce is moping about and five other events are occurring simultaneously. It’s incredibly difficult to get your bearings. Even if just 30 minutes were added on, it could’ve helped us to settle in a bit more. Sometimes you just want a break. Luckily, we are eventually given some form of reprieve but it comes rather late in the game. Nolan has created a problematic scenario where he wants to give ample screen time to everyone, making this somewhat of an ensemble piece like The Dark Knight, he often forgets his protagonist: Batman.

It was always going to be difficult to top the greatness and near-perfection of The Dark Knight. This was going to be a huge challenge for Nolan, some might say insurmountable. But with Rises, his ambitions are epic in scope and almost too large. With that said, much of the action scenes are spectacular to behold. Like in Inception, Nolan has a knack for creating some amazing sequences. Much of them are actually the fights between Bane and Batman. Nolan is also known for chaotic action set pieces where it’s hard to tell what’s going on—this isn’t the case here. Along with that, there’s also a terrific scene in which a football game is disrupted and the stadium is ultimately destroyed by Bane. This scene in particular stuck with me for many reasons. Bane is looking to implement a new social order, and sports are often considered a luxury—a decadence—so this would naturally be one of his first targets. In the previous films, Batman usually receives some kind of new gadget from Lucius Fox. He does not disappoint here, either, when The Bat is unveiled. Some of the scenes of the craft gliding around Gotham are astonishing, especially in IMAX.

What would it have looked like if The Dark Knight Rises had been less ambitious? It certainly wouldn’t have had the impact it did on the audience, who either left disappointed or in a state of awe at the grandiosity of the work. After the sudden, devastating loss of Heath Ledger, it seemed near impossible to really bring a villain that could match his performance. Tom Hardy doesn’t have the charisma or the quotable lines, but it shouldn’t be gauged by how well it measures up to the Joker. Judging the film on its own terms makes this a substantially better film. I’d go as far as to say it’s better than Batman Begins. All of the cast do their best with what they have, especially Bale, whose performance in several scenes is as strong as any in the series. I can’t help but feel, however, that their performances are lost in the scale of the work. Nevertheless, this trilogy brought a seriousness to comic book films that were once scoffed at for their ridiculousness. While The Dark Knight Rises is marred by a cornball ending, it is without a doubt an endlessly enjoyable piece of entertainment.

At any rate, i didn't find as many problems as many of you did with the pacing and messy first act. There were issues, but i suppose knowing beforehand certainly helped. One of my biggest issues with tdkr is that there are too many ideas being crammed into it. None of these ideas/themes even resonate because they're spread so thin. Nolan's trademark clunky dialogue wasn't as bad here as it was in batman begins, where the exposition was littered throughout the entire film. Here it was a little confined, at least.

Before i go any further, i'll see it again. Some of my criticisms may be coming from a harsher standpoint because i'm so disappointed in the film. We'll see, though. I'll have a review up soon with a more well-rounded critique.

PG Cooper and Neverending are the odd men out... Even Doomsy likes The Dark Knight Rises...

My first response is always harsher than when I do my reviews, that should be common knowledge by now.

My points all still stand up in my review. I only gave it more credit and a fair, well-rounded critique. And plus....I just bumped it to an 8, as opposed to a 7. Not exactly a huge leap in logic.

I did like it, just not everything about it. My first grade was a 7. That certainly doesn't say I hated it.

True. But you gave it a C, meaning average, which was enough to send MasterChief and Double S into tailspin.

Right, a C. It's not a bad rating, nor is it a great one. I merely thought it deserved a little better, since I enjoyed myself enough. So I gave it a B.

For the record, I don't think a C is necessarily a bad rating.

As someone who has known Justin for ten years, I can confirm this.
