This was bad. Burton has clearly lost his way. Apparently he needs to be reminded that there's more to cinema than costumes and set designs. Early in his career he was an individual who wore his heart on his sleeve, now he's just peddling the same product in a different guise with no care and love. It makes me sad.

I might see this over the weekend but the reviews are throwing me off a bit. However I'm a big Tim Burton fan and I can forgive a couple crappy movies from the guy who did Edward Scissorhands and Ed Wood.

I haven't liked any Tim Burton movies in over a decade. Pretty much all his adaptions, save for maybe Sleep Hollow. I mean, I have been back and forth between being pretty disappointed, to despising some of his movies.
Having said that, I think I can comfortably say that this may very well be my favorite movie of his during this time. Take that as you will.

Chloë being a werewolf was out of left field and they do nothing with Josette. There's also no established rules as to what can kill Angie. The movie just makes them up as they go along.
It starts pretty promising and turns into something unintentionally hilarious that TWILIGHT would be proud. At least the vampires act like vampires though. |

I think you mean ‘sue’ not ‘sew.’ I usually ignore stuff like that but I’m pretty sure nobody needs any sewing done.
![]() I watched this yesterday at my dollar theater and I think I’m in between you guys on this one. I enjoyed it on the surface and there were a lot of clever puns and a fun idea behind it. The death knell for this movie is the script. It has more characters than it knows what to do with and the result is a very anti-climactic, thrown together ending. Scenes unfold and characters do things that have no effect on anything down the road. The dad leaves? No difference. The daughter is a werewolf? No difference. The psychiatrist is thrown into the ocean? No difference. None of these actions have any influence on what happens down the road. The ending is also so sudden and leaves you just stopped dead in its tracks. Are they setting up for a sequel? Maybe they were assuming they were which looking at the box office reports was probably a bad idea. I did have a good time in it though,it had a lot of laughs and it was fun seeing the staple Burton gothic set designs. The acting from the head honchos was pretty good too,I usually find myself annoyed by Johnny Depp’s performances like in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and such but I liked his performance here. It wasn’t that bad, there was some good stuff to take away from it but it certainly wasn’t on the upper tier of Tim Burton. Man I would really like him to come out with another great movie in the near future. The real question on my mind is Danny Elfman’s score,or lack thereof. Literally the entire musical listing in the film is popular 70s music. Why did they need Danny Elfman to do anything? |

clever puns is an oxymoron.
puns are the lowest form of comedy.

I went to see this movie with low expectations watching the last Burton movies (for the last decade or so). But I found it rather funny. It needed some adjustments here and there but it worked as a comedy.
Sir!... I happen to agree. |

Just watched this on PPV - Sorry if this review is all over the place, but I'm typing as I watch it a second time, and as things come to me.
The prologue was absolutely gorgeous and if they had kept that same tone through the film it would have been a wonderful Gothic tale - unfortunately, they took the fish out of water thing too far when he came to the 70's. (and a lot of it dealt with poking fun at the worst of the early 70's era than anything else - I was there) I don't mind quirky characters - they make things more interesting unless they're too far over the top (and ok Carolyn in the original series was a pretty foolish spoiled child, but still.). I liked the house - weird as it was, it was still impressive. I don't like how they used the secret passages for storage of their nick-knacks, and sports equipment - funny once, but not too many times. There were too many jokes about where Barnabas rested in daytime - I don't mind the small bits of humor but let's not hammer it in. The music selections were too kooky and too numerous - Elfman did a wonderful job though. Barnabas got way too much sunlight exposure without consequence - umbrellas and hats on overcast days don't cut it with me - that removes it from being Gothic enough. Depp is really good, although some of the lines are too archaic (as well as some other people's dialogue being weak in spots) - but he pales in comparison to the presence of Christopher Lee in that scene where he makes the fishing deal. I would have liked to have seen a little more done with the original cast members than just a 2 second walk by - it wouldn't take too much more, but the fans should have gotten a little bit more of them in that scene - perhaps a few lines at a table or something later in the party. Sex scenes - too foolish for words...'nuff said. I did enjoy what happened to Roger lol - so far in the TV series i'm watching (season 3) they don't quite seem to know what to do with him - but in the film - poof - goodbye Roger lol. (hated him in the series). I also kind of liked the family being cursed - werewolf (even though that came out of nowhere), and David's connection to his mom. That was kind of neat. And Victoria's background info was good. And I thought the housekeeper was ok - pretty amusing in a subtle way -- which is what everything else humorous should have been - more subdued - everyone needs a little nervous laughter in bits of Gothic Horror stories. Oh yeah - red dress+boobs = very impressive. ![]() I like the Alice Cooper songs in this too. (less goofy than Carpenters and Barry White and most of the other choices that flawed this film) Balls ![]() McDonald's must have paid a pretty penny for over the top product placement ![]() Oh and the Doctor waking up at the end - were they hoping for a sequel? Burton doesn't do a lot of those these days. I can't really go as low as a 6 for this movie, but it is clearly flawed so 7/10.
