Neverending's suggestion was my favorite, although, I never knew that many Presidents had dirty names. Hmm..

Next list...

My Top 10 Basketball Players All Time

Criteria: My personal opinion, mixed with statistics, accomplishments and legacy left with both the NBA and the world around. Feel free to bash and tear apart my list. I welcome it. I'm going to begin this later today, until then, I have to build a solid list.

Decent list. Although... Jordan, Magic, and Bird would be my TOP 3. Then again, I guess I'm bias cause I grew up in the era when the NBA was awesome.

I debated between Hakeem and Oscar at the ten spot. I'm still not sure I made the right choice.

Great list, Tornado. Mine is pretty close, with some noticeable differences.

10. Shaquille O'Neal

4× NBA Champion (2000, 2001, 2002, 2006)
3× NBA Finals MVP (2000–2002)
NBA Most Valuable Player (2000)
NBA Rookie of the Year (1993)
15× NBA All-Star (1993–1998, 2000–2007, 2009)
2× NBA scoring champion (1995, 2000)
8× All-NBA First Team (1998, 2000–2006)
2× All-NBA Second Team (1995, 1999)
4× All-NBA Third Team (1994, 1996–1997, 2009)
3× All-Defensive Second Team (2000–2001, 2003)
NBA All-Rookie First Team (1993)
3× NBA All-Star Game MVP (2000, 2004, 2009)

Before he became an analyst or was known for his excessive change in teams, Shaq was a dominant force in the NBA. The comparison I always make is a modern day Wilt Chamberlain. He was a double double machine, capable of being unstoppable in the paint both in defense and offense. Despite his inability to really shoot, or hit a free throw, Shaq could pass pretty well for his size and had great IQ. He became the teammate most guys wanted and that's why he spread around as much as he did.

9. Oscar Robertson

NBA Champion (1971)
NBA Most Valuable Player (1964)
12× NBA All-Star (1961–1972)
3× NBA All-Star Game MVP (1961, 1964, 1969)
NBA Rookie of the Year (1961)
9× All-NBA First Team (1961–1969)
2× All-NBA Second Team (1970–1971)
2× Helms Foundation College Player of the Year (1959, 1960)
3× UPI College Player of the Year (1958–1960)
2× USBWA College Player of the Year (1959, 1960)
3× Sporting News College Player of the Year (1958–1960)
3× Consensus NCAA All-America First Team (1958–1960)
NBA 35th Anniversary Team
NBA 50th Anniversary Team
#14 Retired by the Sacramento Kings
#1 Retired by the Milwaukee Bucks

Oscar played what felt like every position at such a small size. The man's career average was just short of a triple double. He was also apart of the two time Gold winning USA team that is to be considered as one of the best sports teams of all time. He was a man capable of scoring anywhere on the court, as well as putting everyone of his teammates into scoring position. His 30.5 season average is 3rd highest all time in a season. Robertson is second highest in all time 30+ point games and is the first player ever to average 10 assists in a season back when assists were harshly categorized.

8. Julius 'Doctor J' Erving

NBA Champion (1983)
2× ABA Champion (1974, 1976)
2× ABA Playoffs MVP (1974, 1976)
NBA Most Valuable Player (1981)
3× ABA Most Valuable Player (1974–1976)
11× NBA All-Star (1977–1987)
5× ABA All-Star (1972–1976)
2× NBA All-Star Game MVP (1977, 1983)
5× All-NBA First Team (1978, 1980–1983)
2× All-NBA Second Team (1977, 1984)
4× All-ABA First Team (1973–1976)
All-ABA Second Team (1972)
ABA All-Defensive First Team (1976)
ABA All-Rookie First Team (1972)
J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award (1983)
NBA 35th Anniversary Team
ABA All-Time Team
NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team
#6 Retired by the Philadelphia 76ers
#32 Retired by the New Jersey Nets

Adding style and substance to a sport that largely lacked it, Dr. J was a phenom before the word 'phenom' was even around. He played high above the rim, so high that he changed the way the sport was seen as. Julius was an offensive playmaker, capable of shooting and dunking at will, but not just that, but adding a certain style to everything he did. He was the first man to jump from the free throw line and dunk it, completely unheard or unseen until he did it. He's most famous for his baseline move against the Lakers, and his rock the baby move against the Lakers as well.

7. Larry Bird

* 3× NBA Champion (1981, 1984, 1986)

* AP National Player of the Year (1979)
* Oscar Robertson Trophy (1979)
* Adolph Rupp Trophy (1979)
* NABC Player of the Year (1979)

White boy from Indiana got game. Larry Bird, love or hate his character, always had a respectable game. The man could shoot, play great defense, he could pass and he had high intelligence. He was always known for having a huge chip on his shoulder, and that pushed a lot of people(myself included) away, but you can't help but recognize the game he played. The man was determined to win, and to be the best on the court. Before Jordan came, and added more style and substance to the game of Basketball, Bird and Magic Johnson's rivalry became something of legends. Two different stories facing off, and their matchups were always so much fun to watch.

6. Wilt Chamberlain

* 2× NBA Champion (1967, 1972)
* 4× NBA Most Valuable Player (1960, 1966–1968)
* NBA Finals MVP (1972)
* 7× All-NBA First Team (1960–1962, 1964, 1965–1968)
* 3× All-NBA Second Team (1963, 1966, 1972)
* 2× NBA All-Defensive First Team (1972–1973)
* NBA All-Star Game MVP (1960)
* 13× NBA All-Star (1960–1969, 1971–1973)
* 7× NBA scoring champion (1960–1966)
* 11× NBA rebounding champion (1960–1963, 1966–1969, 1971–1973)
* NBA Rookie of the Year (1960)
* 50 Greatest Players in NBA History
* NBA 35th Anniversary Team
* #13 Retired by Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Lakers

Wilt The Stilt Chamberlain played before a time when Basketball was basically putting a ball into the hoop, with very few rules. Because of Wilt, so many rules are in place because of his pure dominance in the paint and on the boards. The man was a double double machine, average 30 points per game and 22 rebounds per game. He would constantly block shots and dominate the glass. However, he is most famously known for his 100 point performance that still holds the record to this day. Wilt was a competitor and even going into his 40s and 50s was still a presence in the game. In his mid 40s, Wilt took on new phenom Magic Johnson and was able to humble the young player several times. Wilt flirted with coming back to play in the NBA up until his 50s, but finally died. The man was a physical presence and an absolute monster.

5. Kobe Bryant

* 5× NBA Champion (2000, 2001, 2002, 2009, 2010)
* 2× NBA Finals MVP (2009–2010)
* NBA Most Valuable Player (2008)
* 14× NBA All-Star (1998, 2000–2012)
* 2× NBA scoring champion (2006–2007)
* 9× All-NBA First Team (2002–2004, 2006–2011)
* 2× All-NBA Second Team (2000–2001)
* 2× All-NBA Third Team (1999, 2005)
* 9× All-Defensive First Team (2000, 2003–2004, 2006–2011)
* 2× All-Defensive Second Team (2001–2002)
* NBA All-Rookie Second Team (1997)
* 4× NBA All-Star Game MVP (2002, 2007, 2009, 2011)
* NBA Slam Dunk Contest champion (1997)
* Naismith Prep Player of the Year (1996)

Kobe Bryant is by far one of the most polarizing figures to the play the sport of Basketball, probably ever. He is a dominant force, often times carrying a large chip on his shoulder and never shying away from his own feelings. Beyond his character issues, Kobe Bryant is bar none one of the best offensive playmakers to ever play the game. He's capable of making any shot, under any kind of pressure, anywhere on the court. Not only does he have one hell of a jump shot, but he can also dunk and has one of the best post games out there. Even at his peaking years, he is still capable of scoring with the best of him and fell just short of being scoring champion again this year. He has to be recognized, regardless of his character, but for his will to win the game.

4. Kareem Abdul Jabbar

* 6× NBA Champion (1971, 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987–1988)
* 6× NBA Most Valuable Player (1971–1972, 1974, 1976–1977, 1980)
* 19× NBA All-Star (1970–1977, 1979–1989)
* 2× NBA Finals MVP (1971, 1985)
* 10× All-NBA First Team (1971–1974, 1976–1977, 1980–1981, 1984, 1986)
* 5× All-NBA Second Team (1970, 1978–1979, 1983, 1985)
* 5× NBA All-Defensive First Team (1974–1975, 1979–1981)
* 6× NBA All-Defensive Second Team (1970–1971, 1976–1978, 1984)
* NBA Rookie of the Year (1970)
* NBA All-Rookie Team (1970)
* NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team
* 3× NCAA Men's Basketball Champion (1967–1969)
* 3× NCAA Basketball Tournament MOP (1967–1969)
* Naismith College Player of the Year (1969)
* 2× USBWA College Player of the Year (1967–1968)
* No.33 retired by Milwaukee Bucks
* No.33 retired by Los Angeles Lakers

Like his predecessor(Chamberlain), Kareem was a dominant force in the paint. Capable of scoring anywhere, rebounding and playing excellent defense. He developed by far the best hook shot in the league, and became known for his 'sky hook' that would be launched 10-15 feet in the air over opponents banking in for a basket. He was smart with the basketball, and often times lead the league in field goal percentage, and rarely did he meet his match on the block. He played with a lot more intelligence than most bigs do today and that is something that is extremely rare.

3. Bill Russell

* 11× NBA Champion (1957, 1959–1966, 1968–1969)
* 5× NBA Most Valuable Player (1958, 1961–1963, 1965)
* 5× NBA rebounding champion (1957–1959, 1964–1965)
* 12× NBA All-Star (1958–1969)
* 3× All-NBA First Team (1959, 1963, 1965)
* 8× All-NBA Second Team (1958, 1960–1962, 1964, 1966–1968)
* NBA All-Defensive First Team (1969)
* NBA All-Star Game MVP (1963)
* NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team
* NBA 35th Anniversary Team
* NBA 25th Anniversary Team
* #6 Retired by Boston Celtics
* 2× NCAA Champion (1955–1956)
* NCAA Most Outstanding Player (1955)

By far one of the best defenders the NBA has ever seen, ever. Bill Russell could record rebounds and blocks just as high, if not higher than his actual point total. Another double double machine, Bill Russell was known for his tremendous ability to read off the zones and come over for the tremendous block. He was incredibly intelligent and possessed freakish athletic ability that translated well into his frame. Surprisingly, for his size, he became one of the better man to man defenders the league has ever seen. On top of it all, Bill Russell was a winner. 11 time NBA Champion, Russell has more rings than he does fingers and has always been known for his high amounts of success. The man is an absolute legend in the sport.

2. Earvin 'Magic' Johnson

* 5× NBA Champion (1980, 1982, 1985, 1987–1988)
* 3× NBA Most Valuable Player (1987, 1989–1990)
* 12× NBA All-Star (1980, 1982–1992)
* 3× NBA Finals MVP (1980, 1982, 1987)
* 9× All-NBA First Team (1983–1991)
* All-NBA Second Team (1982)
* NBA All-Rookie First Team (1980)
* 2× NBA All-Star Game MVP (1990, 1992)
* NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team
* NCAA Champion (1979)
* #32 Retired by Los Angeles Lakers

If you talk about smartest Basketball players all time, a few names would come up, and one of those names would more than likely be Magic Johnson. The originator of the 'point forward', Magic Johnson was 6'9 playing the smallest position on the court, point guard. However, his size, mixed with his intelligence and vision made for the best passer in NBA history. Capable of putting up double doubles nightly, Magic was such a dominant passer that he even put up 30 assists in one night. While not having one of the best shooting touches, the man was a winner and was in arguably the best rivalry of all time against Larry Bird. These men brought back the sport, after it died off in the early 70s. Whatever you think of Magic, you have to acknowledge the fact that when he played he smiled, and he was capable of making any play happen with his vast intelligence.

Magic Johnson once said about Michael Jordan, "There is us, and then there is Michael." No other man will ever be what Michael Jordan was for the sport of Basketball, or maybe a sport period. MJ was not the most athletic person on the court, nor the faster, or the strongest, or the smartest...but he was the most determined and the hardest worker. Often times people pick sides between him and LeBron James. Several times people state that LeBron is the superior athlete, maybe that is true, but he did NOT have the work ethic that Michael Jordan had. When Michael was criticized, as he often was, like out of college, he was a ball hog, he became an assist leader, he couldn't shoot the three, he practiced and his career percentage went up, they said he couldn't play defense and he won Defensive MVP and was known for his incredible on ball defense. MJ worked hard and because of that made things happen. He is one of my biggest heroes in life because of his outstanding drive and will. No other man deserves the spot of being number 1 like he does.

Kobe Bryant ahead of Larry Bird?

I don't know about that one...

As much as I like Bill Russell, it cannot be ignored that he was like the only Black guy at the time. I know this sounds racists - but come on - let's get real. He never would have won 11 championships in the `80s, `90s, and today. I think you and Tornado ranked him too high.

I'm considering it. I wasn't crazy about putting Kobe on the list, but felt like his accomplishments warranted it.

Agree to disagree. He did a lot for the sport and he was a winner, despite the competition.

It's easy to win 11 championships when there's no competition whatsoever. For that, you have to take him down a notch. If the `60s Celtics played against the `90s Bulls they would be laughed out of the court.
