Agreed

Have you thought about thowing in some silent movies? Maybe Battleship Potemkin or City Lights.

Also, you should throw in some film noir, possibly Double Indemnity or Force of Evil.

Some classic comedy like Sullivan's Travels or maybe something from The Marx Brothers might also shake things up.

Noted. I haven't thought about silent films. I'm not sure if I could be patient enough with them. But I figure, why not.

If you're gonna watch silent movies then start with comedies.

I would start with your basic essential standard classic films to watch. After that then you can delve into the silents, foreign language classics, etc. Get a base, learn what actors you like, what directors you like, what kinds of movies you enjoy. These guys have already given you a good idea of what to watch, but off the top of my head I would put:

Casablanca
Lawrence of Arabia
Taxi Driver
Double Indemnity
Gone With The Wind
Stagecoach
Psycho
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

I'm partial to lists, it helps keep me systematic and organized, but do whatever's easiest. And lets get a couple movies going in this thread to discuss, for pete's sake!

Already seen Psycho and I've seen a good portion of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I believe I actually bought the blu ray for Taxi Driver a while ago.

This has probably been asked before, but I just wanted an update. So what is your favorite Movie Trilogy Excluding Star Wars (because technically it has 6 episodes), Also state Why?

I'd definitely reccommend all of Scorsese's body of work. Even though there are a few bad/mediocre ones in there, I consider all his films worth seeing. Even something as awful as Bringing Out The Dead has interesting things going on visually.

Bonnie & Clyde is another one to check out for sure.

Also, knowing how much you enjoy Hitchcock and Jimmy Stewart, you should definitely watch Rope -- a film that takes place entirely in one room, and is one continuous camera shot.

Hmmm, but those movies are just so...different, it's hard to compare them. Its like comparing a sirloin steak to a Playstation 3.

Bonnie and Clyde is a transitional film into more of the New Hollywood era, I'd hold off on it and other late-sixties movies until you have a better bearing on the older stuff.

My journey into classic films started with the late `60s and 1970s. Bonnie & Clyde, Cool Hand Luke, and Godfathers I & II were among the first films I saw. So... I understand what Dracula is saying. Once you have seen the brilliance of that era, it's difficult to watch the so-called Studio Era. But then again, I grew up watching James Bond, Clint Eastwood, and Mel Brooks. So, it was easier for me to jump into those two decades since I was already pre-disposed to it.

What bothers me the most is the lack of curiosity people seem to have that I have for classical films.

I've seen a few classical films. Psycho, Vertigo, Sahara(Humphrey Bogart) and a few others here and there. My goal is to go through the bulk of classical made films and review them in this thread or post my general consensus on the film. Since I am a child of this generation and I do enjoy films made today I thought it'd be interesting to sit through films that are generally paced slower and have no 'special effects' and post my thoughts. Here are some I plan on going through. Feel free to add some that you think are worth viewing, I'm sure I will forget some of them.

The Maltese Falcon
The African Queen
The Bridge on the River Kwai
Rear Window
North by Northwest
Casablanca
Citizen Kane
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

--Additions--

Ben-Hur
The Philadelphia Story
Shadow of a Doubt
Paths of Glory
Yojimbo
The Apartment
All About Eve
Sunset Boulevard

Again, feel free to add more. I plan on watching a film here soon and posting up my thoughts afterwards. Thanks in advance guys and hopefully I can give you guys a good read.

The 10 Commandments is another good Heston flick.
Tall In The Saddle. Mostly because of Gabby Hays.
Sargeant York.

AMC use to be good for those types of movies but anymore they play 80's and 90's movies as classics and you seldom get the really old stuff like you use too

We play a classic movies (pre1950s) every Tuesday afternoon. It's a fairly good deal if you're interested in those older films. A ticket costs $3.00, and it comes with a small popcorn and drink.

Interestingly enough, I don't think you live that far away from my theater, MC.

I recently resolved to watch every movie on the AFI Top 100 List used in the CS Film Club. I actually found quite a bunch on Instant Netflix, so I think I'll join you on this, MC. I figure I'll start off watching maybe 2 a week.

I'm thinking of starting with Duck Soup, since it's a mere 68 minutes.

Oh, and I had no idea Birth of a Nation was a whopping 187 minutes. Whoa. And it's a silent film...that'll be interesting.
