Okay, now's as good a time as ever to get back to this, what with Deathly Hallows Part 2 coming out on Blu Ray next Friday.
So as a reminder, this list is: Top 10 Harry Potter Characters The list so far: 10. Nymphadora Tonks 9. Lord Voldemort 8. Bellatrix Lestrange 7. Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody 6. Harry Potter ![]() Portrayed in the films by: Daniel Radcliffe The one thing that makes a central hero both memorable and likable isn't how badass or hardened they may be, but whether or not they're relatable/human enough. And let me tell ya, this wouldn't have been such a monumental franchise if Harry hadn't been those things. What makes Harry such a great central character is that he stays true to who he really is throughout the course of the series. Despite being labeled as "The Chosen One" in the coming war between good and bad wizards, Harry never wants to completely accept his role as that. He's just a teenager; he's more concerned with what a teenager should be concerned with: friends, school, mean teachers and of course...girls. But more importantly, all Harry ever wants is to fit in, and the conflict that presents with his "destiny" is a part of what makes him so endearing. I can completely buy that he doesn't turn into the noble and fearless hero until the end of the series. You know why? Because the whole series has been about Harry's journey/transformation into that hero. Harry is fundamentally an average kid who happened to have been handed an extraordinary destiny. He's beloved by so many around the world because he has flaws of his own, that he's relatable...NOT because he's "the greatest wizard of all time." No, the person who holds that particular title is coming up soon...

The list so far:
10. Nymphadora Tonks 9. Lord Voldemort 8. Bellatrix Lestrange 7. Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody 6. Harry Potter 5. Albus Dumbledore ![]() Portrayed in the films by: Richard Harris and Michael Gambon What can you say about Albus Percival Wilfric Brian Dumbledore? Well, for starters, in Rowling's universe, he's often regarded as the greatest sorcerer in the world...and it's not hard to see why. One moment, he can be calm, serene, eccentric and very friendly, but can turn stern, hardened and pretty badass just as easily (see his fight with Voldemort in Order of the Phoenix for that). When dealing with Dumbledore, you always get the impression that he knows more than he's letting on. And often enough, he usually proves that theory right...and in the most entertaining of ways, no less. Not only is Dumbledore a true master of magic, but he's also very smart. His relationship with Harry is nice and endearing, yet it never comes off as creepy. In general, it's hard not to like this guy. However, he wasn't always all about nobility. As revealed in Deathly Hallows, Dumbledore actually has a pretty dark past...one he's expertly kept hidden from Harry and others over the years, but one that's nonetheless haunted him all his life and has even affected him in more ways than one. That right there adds an extra dimension to Dumbledore and gives us more empathy for him. In the end, Dumbledore seems like the kind of wizard you'd love to hang out with, because if you do, you'll certainly never be bored in his company.

I like Dumbledore enough, but he's never been one of my favourites. Harry on the other hand, top three for me, without a doubt.

Yeah, Harry should be higher. I can't think of many more characters better, surely not 5 others.

Also, as a sidenote, I think it's safe to say that I'm pretty much taking over this thread from here on out, seeing as how Masterchief is keeping pretty busy these days.

I remember when I saw the first Potter movie with Michael Gambon after Richard Harris died. I hated his Dumbledore! Now though I can't even imagen Richard Harris doing the last few movies.

Yeah, while Harris was certainly good at capturing the "regality" of Dumbledore, Gambon just does a much better job of portraying the eccentricities and quirkiness of the character, both of which were more prevalent in the books.

Harris' portrayal was grandfatherly. Gambon played the character like a New York homeless man.

The list so far:
10. Nymphadora Tonks 9. Lord Voldemort 8. Bellatrix Lestrange 7. Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody 6. Harry Potter 5. Albus Dumbledore 4. Remus Lupin ![]() Portrayed in the films by: David Thewlis We've surely all had at least one teacher during our school years who was deemed "the cool teacher", haven't we? Well, for Harry and co., that teacher was Remus Lupin, who was the Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher in their 3rd year. He was the only DADA teacher that genuinely had me feeling bad that he wouldn't be returning to the position in the following book. The thing about Lupin is that he can alternate smoothly between the cool, fun adult and the stern, battle weary one. In Deathly Hallows (the book), there's even a bit of tragicness to his character as he tries to run away/hide from a certain new turn in his life before ultimately coming to accept it. Plus, the relationship he has with Harry is very endearing and almost fatherly...except for the relationship Harry had with -- well, you'll see soon enough. And the fact that he was a friend of Harry's father whilst growing up only adds another layer of likableness to him. Lupin is one of the characters in the series that likes Harry for who he is, and not for his reputation. And for that, he earns respect from us.

The list so far:
10. Nymphadora Tonks 9. Lord Voldemort 8. Bellatrix Lestrange 7. Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody 6. Harry Potter 5. Albus Dumbledore 4. Remus Lupin 3. Sirius Black ![]() Portrayed in the films by: Gary Oldman As cool as Lupin can be sometimes, he's still got nothin' on his fellow Marauder, Sirius Black. Arguably James Potter's BEST friend since childhood, Sirius was framed for murder shortly after Harry's parents were killed and spent 13 years in the wizard prison Azkaban. But he also happened to be Harry's godfather, something Harry wasn't aware of til the end of Prisoner of Azkaban. Sirius wasn't known as one of the Marauders for nothing. His playful nature and smart assedness still remained intact, even after 13 years in prison. The relationship he had with Harry was the closest thing to a parental relationship that Harry has ever known, and JK Rowling wrote it in such a way that it was easy to come to care for it; in fact, the same can be said for Sirius himself. When he dies in Order of the Phoenix, we truly feel it. Because even though he was only around for 3 books, the fact that he was so likable and well-written helped his character leave an impact on us. Plus, Gary Oldman just brings him splendidly to life, accentuating all that is awesome about Sirius through his performance. And who can't like his put-downs on Snape?

Well if we're being literal like that, then Snape as well.

Is it the blonde chick or the fat kid who actually saved the day?
