The list was the most shocking deaths, not the most moving or permanent or whatever. There were a good two years where people thought Spock was legitimately dead.

I figured Spock was coming back when he put his fingers on McCoy's head and said "Remember."

There were rumors about the Spock scene months before the film came out - but no one would either confirm or deny it.
The opening scene was pretty abrupt when they were doing the test - and for a moment we all thought that was it for him - until the doors opened and he got up.
Everyone in the theater really giggled when Kirk asked him "Aren't you dead?"
People giggled when Spock stood up in the radiation chamber and straightened out his tunic too. But that was more nervous laughter - it was a pretty serious moment for Trekkies

Marvin Hamlisch, the only guy nominated for a Bond music score, passed away. In his honor:

I don't remember if JBond and I did a music ranking. If we haven't, then we should definitely do one now. Although most people probably won't care.

Top 30 Opening Credit Sequences in Film

Note: This list does not include all sequences to open up a film. To make the list there must be credits on the screen. Music is often a factor in the ranking.

This one was tough because I didn't have much of a pre-determined list in my head before starting. I started by jotting a few down and then searched many lists on the internet. I clearly wasn't alone in not being able to recall the best ones, because with every new list I found, I found examples that the people before them clearly forgot. So hopefully mine has a good mix of genres and tastes. But I am sure to have missed some.

Also be warned, while many lists on the internet like to say "these credits were amazing for their time," for the most part, my list will not. (But I'll give a shout out here or there)

30. Panic Room (2002)

VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:

Really nothing too fancy here, but they really have a presence. With the camera moving to keep perspective, it's like there are really 10 foot letters hovering over the city. The title of the movie even reflects in the building windows. These credits are a bit remeniscent of North by Northwest.

29. Speed (1994)

I forgot who it was on the boards, but someone recently pointed out that the title credits for Speed was pretty cool. I agreed and decided to eventually make a list. I may have ranked it higher if I could watch it again, but alas, I can't find it on Youtube.

It displayed credits while decending an entire elevator shaft. Another simple one, but it did a great job of setting the mood.

28. EuroTrip (2004)

VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:

Probably a pretty crappy movie, I wouldn't know, but the opening credits are very creative and good for a few laughs.

27. Beetlejuice (1988)

VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:

I used to get such a kick out of this one as a kid. Great music, but this wouldn't have made the list if it wasn't for the final gag.

26. Saturday Night Fever (1977)

VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:

Despite the disco, there's something pretty cool about this opening. (Try watching this one after the "Shaft" opening credits)

Tim Burton always creates amazing opening credits. Here, the music is energetic but the footage is of a mundane New England town. And that reflects the movie perfectly because it's about a mundane New England couple haunting a house. It's genius, really.

That's one of the most iconic opening credits. And for good reasons. Someone walking the streets, checking out the hot girls, and stopping for Pizza is essentially the daily routine of an average New Yorker.

I agree about Beetlejuice -- the music is really what makes those opening credits so memorable. They even used Danny Elfman's theme in one of the commercials for ParaNorman.

They did that so people would think ParaNorman had somethign to do with Tim Burton.

Elfman's Beetlejuice theme is used in almost every trailer/commerical for "dark comedies." I'm surprised you're noticing now.

25. Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979)

VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:

Great animation and song.

24. Reservoir Dogs (1992)

VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:

Apparently this one defines a whole new generation of credits. At least that's what everyone says on the internet. I like it, I just don't love it. This is me throwing it a bone.

23. Fight Club (1999)

VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:
(4:17)

There's no good video of this, the above clip has a tiny bit, but I'm sure you remember it starts at the molecular level and travels outward to a gun on Edward Norton. I feel like comic book movies have ripped this off, notably Spider-Man.

The music's pretty awesome too. I'm starting to think David Fincher appreciates a good credit sequence..

22. The Big Lebowski (1998)

VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:

Pure Cohen.

21. JCVD (2008)

VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:

If you were to describe this one to someone, there's no reason why'd they'd watch it. You really have to see it. It's just Jean-Claude Van Damme doing his thing, but the way it's presented, with no narrative and JCVD going through the motions, it allows itself to fill up with all the nostalgia and B-movie style that people like me grew up with.

It's cliche JCVD, but with a song you'd expect to open up a Tarantino film and editing you'd expect out of Children of Men.

The ending gag is kind of funny, too.

Reservoir Dogs is just simple and cool. The music makes it though.

What do you mean by final gag? I just see a pan over a bunch of houses. Do you mean by the fact that the last house is so far away from the others? I haven't seen the movie since I was a kid so I don't remember if something came after it.

The credits show shots of a real city, then near the end (1:57) they fade into shots of a model. Then a spider crawls over a model house when you think it's a real house.

Oh, funny thing about the Saturday Night Fever opening. When my mom saw that during its original release, she was in the theater that Travolta walks by. The crowd went nuts.
