No, it isn't. Cars was a major letdown. And, Cars 2 looks horrible. People often speak of Pixar having an amazing 15-year streak but they're forgetting how below standard Cars was. Granted, kids love the movie and the merchandise is one of their top-sellers. But that doesn't mean that Cars is better than most.

I think Cars is definitely one of the weakest Pixar films, if not the weakest (it's been a while since I've seen it or A Bug's Life), but I still don't remember dis-liking it. I just remember it not being as deep or entertaining as the others are.

I liked Cars quite a bit, I just remember being ticked off that it rips off Doc Hollywood plot point by plot point.

Talking toys, OK I can understand that. Talking fish, sure they have eyes and mouths, I can see that happening. Talking Bugs, OK I can also see that happening. They are cartoons after all. Talking robots, sure, it is the future. Talking CARS? Even in the Pixar world, I couldn't sit right with the idea. A little too far-fetched for me. It felt like the underwater city in Sharks Tale? That was just silly.

Yeah, I know what you mean. The trailer for the new one shows a metropolis populated by cars. It was cute in the first one, now I'm actually starting to wonder where they hid all of the human bodies.

Talking cars is nothing new. There was one in Roger Rabbit. Also, let's not forget the Chevron commercials which most likely inspired the movie. The problem was that it was a world with JUST talking cars. If their had been human characters it wouldn't have seemed so far-fetched.

Yeah that's what I meant. Most of every other Pixar movies were based in the real world - ours. The characters lived alongside ours, and I suppose that gave the stories a lot more realism. Talking cars building cities populated only by cars doesn't make sense. Remember those little bugs in the first Cars that were supposed to be bees, but they were TINY CARS as well? That doesn't make sense.

Cars is purely a kids movie. I suppose they're allowed to make those every now and again.

But I thought the beauty of Pixar is that they can make movies for both kids and adults at the same time, like Finding Nemo.

That's true. Perhaps they worry though that if every movie is like that family's might get frustrated that cartoons can't just be a simple venture every once in a while and doesn't always need deeper context.

That's where Disney comes in.

I meant in terms of reviews. Cars has a 74% Rotten Tomatoes rating. The ratio of "rotten" movies to "fresh movies" seems to favor "fresh" movies". With Cars, as others have said, I did not like the fact that it is set in its own world. Almost every other Pixar movie have basically taken place in the same world (i.e. "Bug City" in a Bug's Life is the same trailer that was seen in Monsters, Inc.). I do think that Cars 2 might have a chance at being Pixar's first "Rotten" movie. Personally, I would rather see an Incredibles sequel or Ratatouille. I remember reading a Roger Ebert review for Ratatouille, where he said that after watching the movie, he hoped for a sequel.

Yes! Alot of the boards I read feel the same way when it comes to making a sequel to another Pixar series.
To me, The Incredibles has the most potential with where it can go as a series, there are alot of things they could introduce and develop if they were to make a sequel.

IMO, Cars was the Pixar film I enjoyed the least (I wont say "worst" as It was still a fun film, I just didn't connect with it the same way I did with most of their other flicks)
What makes me a tiny bit sad about Cars 2 is that I honestly dont see any reason for it other than the fact that Cars was a huge success when it came to the merchandise, my buddies 2 year old son knows and loves everything about Lightning McQueen and he wasn't even born when it was released!
(But hey, maybe that's what they are aiming for with this one, a film that appeals to a much younger audience....)

Just seems to me that Cars 2 is Pixar making a film for the sake of marketing and merchandise which really surprises me from them. I really hope they make a film that knocks the original out of the park and essentially, is the film that Cars should have been originally....But the trailer does worry me.

Almost a Terminator vibe from it really, instead of Skynet...It's the cars that turn against us!

Creepy.

Yeah, I agree with the above. I'd much rather see a sequel for Monsters Inc or The Incredibles than Cars 2. What's the point?

It seems that way, but I doubt it. The franchise is successful with young children. That's their target audience with this film -- and the short movies that air on Disney Channel.

Monsters Inc is getting a sequel.

Speaking of which, I watched parts of the first last night, I really love that film.

Oh, I mean I'd rather see Monsters Inc. 2 made FIRST, instead of Cars 2.

Oh, yeah I agree. Like most here, I wasn't crazy about Cars.

Though unlike most here, I really like A Bug's Life.

A Bug's Life was OK until the giant bird thing appeared. To me, anyway.

Cool, but they forgot a few. Like Le Bombe or whoever from Incredibles is in Ratatouille.

Now someone should make a montage of the ball with a star.

I'm hearing that the next Pixar film is called Brave and is set in medieval Scotland.
