Haven't seen it since I was a kid, but I remember liking it. Definitely enjoyed it more than the Ralph Bakshi LOTR movie, but I don't know if that would still be the case today.

The Rankin and Bass Hobbit was one of my favorite cartoon movies. It helps if was into the Rankin and Bass christmas specials for the animation is in there style.
Most remember the Voice For Gandalf and Smaug being slain. |

I too found it rather decent to watch as well. A pity the Beorn scene was omitted but at the end of the day, it was still watchable. Agreed about the Bakshi abomination. At least he made a stab at it but should have at least tried to finish it. How it ended abruptly was just awful.
At least Rankin & Bass released RotK not too long after. Even that wasn't so bad. At least The Scouring of the Shire was included.

That Bakshi effort was hideous. There was me thinking it would give me some enjoyment while I was waiting for the first of the live action films to come out...I was way off.
How can somebody adapt the single greatest story ever written and not satisfy a Tolkien fanatic on any level? I hope he failed to finish it due to SHAME. |

Actually, the studio s*rewed him over royally, but in a way, I'm glad because he wasn't able to finish LOTR.
I've never been a fan of Bakshi's work. Apart from being responsible for mentoring John Kricfalusi (Ren and Stimpy), I think he's a hack with his animation style being "slightly better" than Filmation.

To get back on topic, I thought the Rankin & Bass cartoon version was "cute" but I shudder everytime I hear that "Greatest Adventure" song with the singer who warbles more than the Gibb brothers.
