I've only watched the first episode of this show. While it has been entertaining for the most part, I'm not sure how long I can stomach this well-produced soap opera.

Never read the books, but I hope more episodes take place there. I'm sure it will, but I'll be more excited to see the happenings at the wall, more than anything else. Maybe some of the capitol city displayed more as well.

of course, having read the books, i know which minor moments now lead to critical moments later, so to me, nothing is really filler, as there is nothing "filler" in reality in the story.

It is fun to see peoples thought though that haven't read the book.

First of all, I'm reading the book now, but more importantly, I've read a book before so I I don't appreciate the idea that I need explosions ever 5 minutes to keep me interested. If you like the episode more than me, fine, but I don't need to be ostracized for finding an episode boring. By your logic, the show can do no wrong pace-wise. For me, it can. I'm not ostracizing anyone, I'm just saying that slow moving shows are sort of HBO's M.O. and have been since The Sopranos and you sort of have to expect it. Compared to say, Deadwood, Game of Thrones is moving at light speed.

I love slow moving shows. But if an episode lacks in plot it needs something gripping to replace it. Suspense, interesting character development, whatever. Personally, I didn't feel it with this one.

I prefer the HBO comedies (Curb, Entourage, Bill Maher) over their dramas. Although, not all HBO dramas are slow and boring. True Blood is fast paced and isn't dialogue driven.

OMG I loved the part where the princess was getting boned from behind. What a great show.

I never said anything about thinking you only needing action or what not.

I'm honestly just interested in people opinions other then fanboys that have read everything. If people that have not the books find it slow paced, I just am interested by that. I dont mean that in a negative way.

most complaints from my friends that are diehard of the books believe the shows are going way toooo fast. I think they are just too demanding and want every minor detail in the show, and that will lose many people.

The only comments I dont get, are anything calling it a "soap opera", but to each their own.

Other forums I go to, that also discuss this show have almost complete knowledge of the series. This is one of the few places I get other thoughts and opinions.

I haven't read the book, I think it feels like a soap opera, I think it's slower than most shows I watch, but damn I'm loving it so far. On to episode three!

I had no idea the books were this popular until this show started and fans came out of the woodwork. I'd only even heard of the things like two years ago.

Same here. I have a billion sci-fi and about 5 fantasy books on my shelf. I hold it, perhaps unfairly, in a stereotype of a genre that only involves regal families, betrayal, and fantastical creatures. ...Actually, this series isn't helping me dispell this stereotype, but the book/series is good so far.

a lot of fantasy I use to read involved mainly a group of heros in High fantasy off on some quest to kill the dragon, save the princess.

Over the past 6 or 7 years I've been lucky enough to read less "fluff" fantasy. Where no matter what happened, all the characters were usually always safe, and 90% of characters made it to the end of series.

Stuff like Robin Hobb, Steve Erikson, C.S Friedman (who writes a lot of Sci-fi), and George RR Martin (whos older stuff is actually more Sci-fi and horror). Series with more "grit" to em.

I remember I was 13 or 14 when I saw a classmate reading Game of Thrones. He's always been the avid reader, and I remember the first paragraph he asked me to read was the part about the princess having sex. That was probably my first exposure to sex in the form of a novel.

JBond is just disappointed because there was less boobs in this episode.

Seriously though, this one did lack more of a contained plot structure, but established some important things, like Jamie's history, the stuff at the wall (including Jon making his mark), and introducing the council. From my recollection of the book, this should be the only part to have this sort of filler feel.
That said, this is one of those over-arching shows where the real story takes place over the whole season. But this was the inevitable episode where relationships need to be established or introduced and some back-story has to be revealed.

My first exposure was The Godfather. I was 11-years-old when I read the novel. I checked it out of the library after I had seen the movie. Don't tell Dracula, but I was a bit of a film snob growing up too. LOL. So, anyway, in the beginning there's a part where that singer is drunk at home and waiting for his wife to arrive. When she gets home, he asks where she has been, and she says, "out f---ing." I laughed out loud for a good 5 minutes.

I loved the 3rd episode, this show has well and truly sucked me in already. I mean how often are we going to see a something of this kind on TV with this budget and these actors involved?

I think I'll wait til the season ends before hiring the books from the uni library then I'll read them all before season 2 arrives.

Just watched all 3 episodes last night. I was surprised by how much I ended up liking the 2nd and 3rd episode.

The first one seemed to have an over excess of sex it seemed like and not enough character development and story.

But the rest of the episodes really surprised me by how much more details we got of the plot.

Also the budget for this seems like crazy!!!
