Default Stargate Universe

I've heard little things about this show here and there, but they recently confirmed the main actor, so I thought I'd make a thread for it.

Now the site that has the story is really annoying, colloquial, and ad laden, so I'll copy and paste it.

Robert Carlyle to be joing Stargate Universe...

Scottish actor, Robert Carlyle has been cast in the latest Stargate series, reports Entertainment Weekly.
He will play Dr. David Rush in Stargate Universe, the third TV spinoff from the 1994 Kurt Russell movie. The story is said to revolve around a group of soldiers, scientists and civilians who are trapped on a ship in deep space.

Stargate series creators Brad Wright and Robert Cooper said: "We are very excited about having an actor of this calibre, around which we can build a strong, character-based series.

"Robert Carlyle will engage a broad audience and we hope to deliver a show that demonstrates to new viewers that the loyalty of longtime fans of the Stargate franchise has been well-deserved."

Stargate Universe will debut as a two-hour movie on the Sci Fi Channel next summer.
Here's the synopsis of the show according to imdb, for those curious.

The Previously unknown purpose of the "Ninth Cheveron" is revealed, and ends up taking a team to an Ancient ship "Destiny", a ship built millions of years ago by the Ancients, used to seed Distant galaxies with Stargates. This team, led by Colonol Everet Younge, must now continue the Ancients work, and encounter new races, new technology and new enemies, as this crazy run away ship takes them to the far ends of the Unnivese!

I've heard scary things about this show, for instance, that they're going to put in many young actors and try to make it "hip." But also, I'm confident about the plot, because the one thing I never got to see in Stargate: SG1 that I wanted to was stuff about the actual building of the Stargates and their purpose. It looks like this will get into it.

I really don't understand how the Ninth Cheveron will work, isn't it just the 8th that takes you to another galaxy? And from what I've read the Milkyway Alpha site is attcked so they jump through the Stargate to get away, why would they use 9 cheverons in an emergincy?

Is Robert Carlyle going to be like Richard Dean Anderson or Robert Patrick? Is he going to be in one episode or the whole show? He seems a big-ish name to have.

Well, he plays Dr. David Rush, "the ship's brilliant Machiavellian scientist", and isn't the leader (at least not to begin with). But the 2-hour premiere will probably end of a game-changing cliffhanger, so maybe he'll become the leader. Or maybe even the villain. Or he just dies. Or nothing changes, and he's a supporting lead.

In my opinion the Stargate shows were crap, but this sounds like it could be good.

So you answer my question without an actual answer of any kind...

That doesn't even make any sense. Who would watch a second spinoff if they hated the rest of it? (And you're wrong )

How would any of us know for sure? Personally, I think he'll be what Robert Patrick was to Stargate Atlantis, he won't be around long.

Just read about the details of this show on Scifi website.

Sounds like Star Trek Voyager - Stargate style.

While I don't know Star Trek: Voyager, I knoo it's going to be much more Star Trek, in that it seems like a lot will take place in space and ships.

Star Trek: Voyager is basically about a ship that gets lost in a galaxy far far away, and they have to come together to find there way back home which could take up too 50 years. Unless they find some other route or solution.

Oh...then that's REALLY close. Man, why am I not surprised. These series have been following Star Trek from day one.

Battlestar Galactica is about a fleet of ships on the other side of the galaxy and they have to come together to find there way to Earth. That's old and new.

Red Dwarf is about a ship that is thousands of years away from Earth when the survivors on it turn it round and head for home, they have to come together to find there way to Earth.

Both those shows are older than Star Trek Voyager and both have very samey story lines at there core but all are very different.

I believe there's going to be a preview of sorts for this show during or after the 2-hour Battlestar Galactica finale.

Saw the preview... looks really good you can tell it's going to be dark and very different from Atlantis and SG-1 and I guess the franchise really needs that. It needs to be different and unique in it's own way to bring in new fans and keep the ones they have.

Didn't show much, but it was fun to see. And you can tell there's a third Stargate design, now.

So from what I read so far, this show will take place almost entirely in space? Sounds like a substitute for BSG now that it's over.
