holy $hit the new one is terrible. felt all teleprompted and there was no chemistry and i could'nt at all relate to their opinions. plus making it look modern is just stupid. nothing about it made me have any hope for its future and it need to end. plus watching it right after seeing a great roeper/phillips segment on entouragereally made it worse. ABC just beat a great horse to death

you gotta respect ebert and roper for knowing when to leave. It's a shame they ruined a perfectly good show

Really, the show didn't change all that much. It's the same idea just with an awful new set and one segment where they talk to 3 other critics via satellite. It's just that now they have 2 hosts with hardly any charisma. Why they bothered making these minor changes even if it meant sacrificing their talent just doesn't make any sense to me. Are they trying to stay "hip"?

Man alive. They need a rival video movie review show I think. I need something else to watch. These two guys have ZERO charisma.

Roeper said on Leno the other night him and Ebert are working on bringing back the old show in some format either online or on TV.

I hope he gets the show back with Phillips.

The wording of this thread scared me for a second. On the main page, it doesn't show every character of the most recently-posted-in thread. So when this thread is on top, on the main forum it reads "Roger Ebert no longer with..."

I thought he had died.

Yeah, they had good chemistry. Phillips is way more interesting to listen to than these two robots.

I think Leno should replace Ebert.

Was at the SAG Awards Red Carpet yesterday. Ben Lyons walked by and I boo'ed him and shouted you suck. He walked quickly.

Ten minutes later he did the same thing, only this time he looked at me harshly. I shouted "BOO" and he rudely said 'Thank you!'. I retorted "No problem, you suck!". Barely anyone spoke to him the rest of the day.

Chicago Tribune's Michael Phillips, N.Y. Times' A.O. Scott take over 'At the Movies'; Ben Lyons, Ben Mankiewicz out

A year after its extreme makeover of "At the Movies" went over like "Land of the Lost," Disney's ABC Media Productions said Wednesday it is overhauling the Chicago-based syndicated TV program yet again in hopes of reconnecting with its respected past.

Gone are Ben Lyons of E! Entertainment Television and Ben Mankiewicz of Turner Classic Movies, the cable hosts Disney chose last summer to front what it called "the next generation of the series," in favor of a return to dueling newspaper film critics, Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune and A.O. Scott of the New York Times.

Both Phillips and Scott filled in for Pulitzer Prize winner Roger Ebert opposite fellow Chicago Sun-Times columnist Richard Roeper in the earlier incarnation of the program, which traces its roots to Chicago public broadcaster WTTW-Ch. 11 in 1975, when Ebert was first paired on-air with Gene Siskel, the late Chicago Tribune reviewer.

The new pair will make its debut when the series begins its new season Sept. 5 on ABC-owned WLS-Ch. 7, where the show is produced for syndication by Disney-ABC Domestic Televison.

Fantastic news!

I watched this show regularly before Gene passed. I loved it. Once Roeper came on, I caught it every now and then, but it wasn't the event in my weekend that it used to be. Roeper didn't come from a film background and it always showed. He was occasionally witty, but never had the depth or breadth of Ebert's criticisms. I barely watched after Ebert left. I watched half of one episode of the Bens' "At the Movies" and it made me feel sick. They made Roeper look like Janet Maslin.

I was so sure it was dead.

Not only are Michael and Tony wonderful picks, they are the best newspaper film critics working today. I really value their perspectives, and can not wait to catch them every weekend again. To have two tested film critics actually hosting this show again is something to celebrate. My only concern is that they do tend to have similar tastes and might not create those zesty arguments the show is known for.

Now if they really want to make me happy, they'll actually air the damn thing before Friday, when movies traditionally open. I know that might conflict with press screening times...but one can hope.

Oh sweet lord, I hate Ben Lyons he's so damn annoying on that show. I just caught one of the newest episodes and I turned it off as soon as he got on. Good to hear Michael Phillips is gonna get on.

This is great news!! This show can finally be watchable again with two critics who actually know what they're talking about.

Truth be told, I might still miss Roeper. I respect both of these guys more as critics, but Roeper did have a very watchable persona. Really I've been missing this show a lot, it gives a really nice spoiler free overview of the movies and it's nice to have pro analysis of a movie accompanied by clips, it really helps you decide what you wnat to see better than dry print reviews (which I usually prefer to read after I see the film rather than before).

HAHA! **** "the Bens"! They were ****ty TV hosts and A.O. Scott is amazing. THIS is a TV movie review show I'd watch! But I did semi-respect Roeper.

Finally I can watch "At the Movies" again

That's the thing, you need people that can host a TV show. One thing is to write a review and another is to host a TV show. I don't like Michael Phillips. He came across as kinda snobbish when he co-hosted. As for A.O. Scott I missed the episode he guest hosted, so I don't know if he's good or not. They should have gone with Christy Lemire. She's an idiot, but atleast she's hot and entertaining.
