In doing so, they shaft Clint Eastwood's best movie in over a decade, Mystic River. But that's alright, we'll just give him the Oscar glory next year for a movie that's not as good, Million Dollar Baby, and in doing so we'll shaft Martin Scorcese yet again for his best movie since Goodfellas, The Aviator. But that's alright, we'll finally give it to him when his next movie comes out, that pretty good but not great cop movie with the huge ensemble cast. But wait, that means we need to shaft Eastwood again, this time for his fantastic WWII film Letters from Iwo Jima, the best war movie in recent memory. Sometimes I wish they would have given the Oscar to FOTR or TTT. At least no one would have complained about A Beautiful Mind or Chicago losing.
Great as Letters from Iwo Jima was, it never had a chance one way or another. The movie made, like, two million dollars at the B.O. (the lowest grossing BP nominee of the modern era) and the thing just generally had zero momentum. If The Departed hadn't won Babel probably would have.

Mystic River sucks. There was nothing wrong with the Academy's choice that year.

Also, I like what you said about Titanic being underrated. It certainly is.

Most people I know love Mystic River, but other people I know despise it. Not a lot in the middle, love it or hate it. Not sure what there is to hate, I found it pretty compelling.

Tommy Lee Jones winning Best Supporting Actor for The Fugitive
Jones has had some good turns in his films, but this is a cop movie, and he's the cop. There isn't some dramatic element or underlying personal turmoil that his character is going through. He's just a US Marshal going after his man, and more or less plays by the rules in order to do it. It's a very simple role that beat out some much more deserving nominees, such as Ralph Fiennes for Schindler's List, Pete Postlethwaite for In the Name of the Father or even John Malkovich for In the Line of Fire.

Heat being nominated for....nothing
Now I'm not throwing this in because it's one of my favorite movies, even though it is. I'm saying this because the awards competition that year wasn't necessarily huge, and Heat in and of itself was a much deeper, character driven movie than, say Babe or Apollo 13. You could say the same for other movies to come out in 1995 such as 12 Monkeys, Casino, or the first Toy Story, but I feel Heat sits above those, and with 0 nominations to its credit I think the Academy missed at least giving a nod to a very worthy contender and its actors/filmmakers.

I didn't despise Mystic River...I just didn't like it.

This has also always bothered me. Really agree with this.

And in regards to Mystic River, really, what's wrong with it? I suppose I can understand not liking it, but hating it? That just seems, I don't know, strange I guess.

I didn't realize Jones won over Fiennes. That's ridiculous.

As for Mystic River, the over-acting is mostly what I hated. But it did have one of the world's biggest over-actors Sean Penn.

Also, it does seem odd that Heat wasn't nominated for anything. Not even sound effects editing?

Heat is kind of a cult film, it did good at the box office and with critics at the time, but it wasn't really until years later that people started calling it a modern classic.

Heat is amazing and it's mind boggling to me that it didn't at least get a win...let alone a nomination.

Makes perfect sense to me. Name a movie like Heat that DID get a nomination.

That's very vague. What exactly do you mean? A heist movie? An action movie? A crime-drama? Cause there's plenty of movies like Heat that did get nominations.

Stanley Kubrick kicking the bucket with a goose egg
I already kinda touched on it with my 2001 reference, but the fact that this guy didn't win any Oscars over his lifetime is astounding. A good number of his movies are modern classics that are still watched by even casual movie goers. 2001, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Lolita, and so on. Eyes Wide Shut was also a fine movie to have as a great director's swan song. You can say the same about other directors like Hitchcock or Kurosawa, but Kubrick's vision and depth in his films make him one of the most egregious errors. As Woody Allen said about the Oscars, 'When you see who wins those things, or who doesn't win them, you can see how meaningless this Oscar thing is.'

This one is definitely baffling... and this is coming from someone who's only seen two Kubrick films.

Kubrick won an Oscar for the special effects on 2001. Better than nothing, I suppose. Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca won the Oscar for Best Picture. Hitchcock himself didn't get the trophy, but a movie can't win Best Picture without the director getting some credit. Right?

I have a couple new list ideas, mostly because everyone else's top 10 threads are outshining mine. But I'll make this one kinda personal, and I know Bond will loooove reading all about it.

Doomsday's Top 10 Favorite Western Movies

10. The Proposition
I know I've kinda beaten a dead horse by talking about this film so much, even in this thread, but I still think it's a damn fine movie and probably the best western since Unforgiven (I don't think I can take credit for that, pretty sure it's on the slip sleeve). The entire cast turns in fine performances and it doesn't rely on the action to keep the film going. In fact, this film draws a fine line between 'action' and 'violence.' When it comes to most westerns, you can find yourself in one of two camps, ones that are more action-oriented like Tombstone or 3:10 to Yuma, or more character driven westerns with substance, like this.

I hope Unforgiven is at the top or at least close to it.

I haven't seen too many westerns, but the few I've seen I love. Sadly I think only one of the ones I've seen will make your list.

Time for you to get crackin on some of these, you won't regret it.

9. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
But there are such things as the light-hearted western film, and this is one of the best. Butch Cassidy is a terrific blend of humor and adventure, comedy and sorrow, laughter and suspense. There's a little something for everybody in this film and it's hard not to come out with a favorite scene or line. If the intense and sometimes unexpected action and chase scenes don't impress you, then the touching drama and romance scenes will definitely give you something to smile about. Great all around movie.
