Health Care Horror Stories

Like Michael Moore, I am trying to write a research paper for my school concerning the health care system in America. It'd be nice if you guys can provide me with some horror stories that you guys have experienced over the years. Please include details of your ordeals, like what happened to you and the price you had to pay in order to get that problem fixed.

I've heard of people who had operations where the Anesthesia only paralized them - they were awake for the whole proceedure and felt everything that went on.

I worked in health care for close to 8 years as a recreation therapists in a long term facility for seniors/end of stage AIDS patients/ young disabled folks.
What do you want to know?

Hmm, stories to do with insurance companies mostly. About how people might have been denied treatment for various reasons. Oh, and the kind of medical bills you guys have to fork out from your own pockets?

I pay nothing for hospital stays, 30 days in rehab, or most of my prescriptions or diabetic supplies

Thats happened to me once. I went in for a surgury when I was in my teens (about 20 years afo) and I remember laying there listneing to them talking and going about thier business. I kinda wondered how exactly I would tell them I could hear them (the doctors) and then I fell back to sleep. When I was reawoken after surgery I mentioned it to my surgeon and he just said I was dreaming, but I know I wasnt. I didnt even think about it until some years later when it (awake surgeries) all started to surface on the news and wondered how many other doctors told the patients that they were just "dreaming".

I bet I was awake for about 10 minutes or so, but someone must have noticed something because I do remember falling asleep again and being woke up after surgery. I was not drowsy or anything, wide awake. I didnt feel anything happeneing though, just remember listening to them talk.

That's scary.

A couple of years ago I had my wisdom teeth removed and had to go under. I remember waking up and thrashing about. As I was leaving I heard one of the women say something along the lines of: "That's one tough chick." or something. I can imagine I gave them quite a fight. Lmao. I had a male chiropractor give me **** about how tight I was, told me I should loosen up by stretching or something. He would take breaks when handling me. I'm solid muscle.....or I was.

Those ARE horror stories indeed, but not exactly the kind of stories I am looking for.

Nope - my health insurance has always been pretty decent and not much to hassle with. Maybe this is more the norm than the problems which is why it's hard to find horror stories.

I did that after my jaw surgery. I remeber blanking out in the hospital bed after they gave me a sedative, then I remember them asking me to help get myself on the table. Then nothing until I woke up in the ICU. I was in alot of pain and so disoriented that I punched the nurse by accident. I didn't realize it though until much later. She said she had been dealt worse, heh.

As for claims, I did get bill three times for a visit I made. Then they misquoted how much I owed so I got penalized for it. That was when I didn't have health insurance though and I was working directly through the hosipital. That's never fun...

I'm lucky enough to have a full time job that provides health insurance..... but I work in a pharmacy (in a ****-hole of a town) and there are a lot of people on medicaid. They're pretty lucky and get most of their meds for free so they piss and moan when they actually have to pay a $10 copay, acting like it's a lot of money.

I also see a lot of cases where people have a right to be upset about how much they're paying for prescriptions. Exubera (a medication to treat high blood sugar in diabetes patients) costs a little over $600, and I've seen people with insurance fork out the money to pay for all of it because it wasn't on their plan's list of preferred drugs.

My poor mother was going through chemo, and the insurance plan she had sucked. She had treatment, got the bills, had to mail them to the insurance company, and they would pay.

They were so slow to pay that the bill collectors would be calling her house, harassing her day and night for the money that the insurance company hadnt paid yet.

She was real sick too, and then she had to deal with this. It made me so mad.

This is nothing compare to the DISASTEROUS SOCIALIZED Universal HealthCare the Democrats would like to put in place in America. LETS see if this agenda goes through an appointment with a Dr. takes up to 17 months and then you just might get a quack as a Doctor since there just won't be enough Dr's for the populace and then if you think their is a shortage of drugs think of what it will be like then. Not to mention the higher taxes everyone will be paying for cost, added hospitals, parking lots, supplies etc. Anyone think this will be any cheaper than it is today. Think again. ANYONE EVERY WONDER WHY PEOPLE WITH MONEY FROM UNIVERSAL SOCIALIZED HEALTHCARE NATIONS COME TO AMERICA FOR THEIR HEALTH CARE. Michael Moore evidently thinks with a carrot up his butt and more of his political agenda then telling us the truth about HealthCare.

Well, we recently had a lady die here in Toronto, because of lyposuction:

On a personal note, my brother lost the sight in one eye because his dentist capped a tooth that was infected and he had to wait too long in Hospital emergency (they didn't think a sore tooth was important). He could have died.

I wish I could help but I've been fortunate enough to have had insurance for most of my life. Right now I don't, which is sad.

Haven't had any since I became dependent. And I've not been without medical needs, unfortunately. I've been hard-pressed by collection agencies as a result of a couple medical emergencies for awhile now. It's quite stressful at times.
