I prefered Return Of The King Rankin and Bass Too The Animated LOTR for thought it stunk.
besides Huston as Gandalf was epic.

I never saw that one.

I really liked the rotoscoping method at the time - Bakshi's Wizards is also a favorite of mine.
I wish Bakshi had finished LotR

Yeah I'll say. What was the point of leaving the film unfinished anyway? Budget constraints? And it ended so abruptly it wasn't funny!!!

As for the Hobbit animated film yeah that was pretty good for it's time. I do wonder why they decided to leave out Beorn though! And I'm sure SPJ will have crafted an epic Battle of the Five Armies in his script! So looking forward to that and with the two films being made, I'm sure Beorn will not be omitted in this too!!

And I must add that seeing some of Alan Lee's drawing in the books look breathtaking. Also here's hoping they go with John Howe's Beorn impression too. I also remember Peter mentioning inviting Ted Naismith to be a Conceptual Artist as well. I think 2 artists are enough though.

There was a big fight over how to release Bakshi's film. LOTR or LOTR Part 1.

Bakshi intended to do the second half, but found working on an adapted story of someone else's work (and fighting with the studio) was not enjoyable.

I am rignt now listing to the interview phillipa's(sp) interesting.

I loved Alan Lee's drawing from the ring series( EEE DVD's) & in the closing credits for ROTK.

I must say that I had never seen any of the cartoon's that was released years ago. I have heard of them but, never seen them.

I've actually always preferred John Howe to Alan Lee. But that's just me.

I'm still on the fence as to who is the better of the two actually. Love both their works either way!

Another very interesting link to ponder.

Nasmith's illustrations were the first I ever saw of TLOTR back in the 90s, so for me he will always be number 1. The only issue I have is with his drawing of faces and his interpretation of the Balrog.

This was the first ever image I saw after reading the Fellowship of the Ring, it was advertising a set of 12 Danbury Mint china plates, each containing an original Nasmith illustration:

I showed it to my mum and she went on to buy me all 12, bless her, which have gathered dust under my bed in their original packaging for the last 12 years or so... I've also still got the page of the newspaper with the picture and advert on it folded up somewhere in my 'history' drawer.

Waiting to hear PJ confirm this before getting to excited. I always believed some hobbit movie would be made just wasn't sure if PJ or the previous cast would be in it. I expected reboot to happen before we saw The Hobbit.
But least its possitive news.

Yeah I think MGM and Warners wanted Jackson to direct all along considering what 400 million dollars involved and Deltoro while good hasn't had that kind of a smash hit.

And another interview. This one is probably better. Plus it's in Bag End.

Think PJ was ready for the casting for he has Cast Bilbo and all The Dwarves already. Wonder who will play Bard Smaug and The Elf King.

Well, well, WELL!!!! Some fantastic news right here!!! And some Kiwi talent too no less! But isn't Richard Armitage a little young to be Thorin? And Martin Freeman OH YES our prayers have certainly been answered! Also been enjoying the Sherlock show while flying up to London last week. Managed to catch all three episodes on the way up.

Some of the dwarves are cast younger than I was expecting. Especially Thorin.

And another inciteful interview with Sir Peter and Philippa Boyens with Mark Sainsbury on NZ's Close Up. I really feel for Sir Peter after seeing this. He's looking really nervous about the eventual meeting with WB and that Helen Kelly needs to take a flying leap!!!

Well WB is a big force and without them the movies couldn't happen and they are not Newline so they need more convincing then Newline Cinema did with Rings. If it meant it had to move to keep peter and not give to Yates to direct then I am all for a move but lets see what happens and i hope hear more casting.

If WB moves the films offshore then all blame will be laid upon the gutless wonder Simon Whipp of the MEAA and to that clueless jezebel Helen Kelly who is in it for her 15 minutes of fame. And to Robyn Malcolm one of the members of the minuscule NZ Actors Equity. I never watched Outrageous Fortune in the first place!!! NZ actors never really cared about the money in the first place!!!!

All these fools in the NZ Actors Equity oughta be ashamed of themselves allowing a man in Whipp who apparently singlehandedly ruined the Australian Film Industry, and is now putting his nose into ours!!!! STAY OUT AUSTRALIA!

Anyone hear about some dude wanting to buy MGM dept and they merg with Lionsgate provided they don't go with Spyglass. If that happen does it mean the Hobbit doesn't happen. Even though was greenlit by wb newline and mgm at the time based on the mgm new deal
