Butler Escapes from New York?
300 actor may star in remake.
by IGN Staff

US, March 13, 2007 -
Gerard Butler has been looking for a hit in Hollywood for years, and he finally got it this past weekend with the hugely successful debut of 300. And now it looks like he may be appearing in another potentially big genre film: a remake of John Carpenter's classic Escape from New York.

Variety is reporting that Butler is "at the center of a package that CAA began shopping Monday" for a redo of the 1981 sci-fi action flick that originally starred Kurt Russell as the one and only Snake Plissken. Obviously Butler would take on that role, one of the great antiheroes of the movies, in the remake.

Neal Moritz is attached as producer and Black Hawk Down writer Ken Nolan is scripting. Variety also reports that "several studios" are fighting over landing the pic, largely because of Butler's new star power. Couldn't they see that star power coming like six months ago as the rest of us did?

NO! GODDAMNIT! NO! This is completely pointless. There is no reason in Heaven or Hell to remake this movie. (Aside from the fact that Hollywood is completely out of ideas)

Nothing about this movie is so outdated that it warrants a remake. At this rate we'll be seeing a Matrix remake in about 3 years.

The Escape Will Happen at New Line
Source: Variety
March 16, 2007

New Line has won the bidding war for a remake of Escape From New York, with 300 star Gerard Butler attached and Neal Moritz producing through his Original Films.

Black Hawk Down screenwriter Ken Nolan is attached to write the script. Executive producers include Original's Ori Marmur; Ron Halpern and Frederic Sichler of Canal Plus, which held the remake rights; and John Carpenter, who directed the 1981 original.

Butler would portray Snake Plissken, the convict and war hero who's sent into a futuristic New York City -- which has been turned into a giant maximum security prison -- to rescue the president of the U.S. after his plane is knocked down by terrorists. The original was set in 1998.

Kurt Russell played Plissken in the original film and again in Carpenter's 1996 sequel Escape From Los Angeles.

We dont need this movie, part of the origionals charm was its meagre budget. No doubt this will be overblown.

That said, Butler is a good choice for the role.

Out of interest, i heard a rumour he tested for Batman for Begins, anyone else hear that?

Hollywood loves a remake. It is way too soon to do this movie. They should wait until Kurt Russel is dead, which can't be too far off by the looks of the guy.

Gerard Butler? Come on, lets do better, he's really not that good of an actor.

Well he was in that Attila tv movie, which was beyond horrible. 300 had some of the most blatant overacting I've ever seen, too. I dunno, he wouldn't necessarily be my first choice.

My only concern over Butler is his voice,i'd have preferred Josh Holloway
I only saw EFNY for the first time last year and although the concept and Snake were good i just kept thinking how cool it could have been with a bigger budget and today's technological advancements so i am interested to see where this goes.

But 300 is the most unsubtle book ever, the movie was never gonna be calm and subtle.

Talk about your unnecessary remakes. EFNY is a classic. Here is what I do not understand. They had the idea for "Escape From Earth." With Stallone as Rocky and Rambo, Willis as McClane and Ford as Jones, I don't see how Russell wouldn't still work as Plissken. Nobody was interested in another EFNY movie then, and now all of a sudden a remake is announced and studios are fighting over who gets to release it? God I hate Hollywood sometimes. This also means we'll never see Kurt Russell return to the role. If they make sequels, they will be sequels to the remake and not the original.

I kinda agree, and both Escape movies are just guilty pleasures, nothing great or groundbreaking but they're entertaining and nothing to be taken too seriously. There's really no reason they can't do a sequel with Russell, he's not THAT old.

Who in the fricking world wants to see a remake of "Escape from New York". This will be nothing more than another DUD remake like "THE THING", "THE FOG", "Planet of the Apes". Will these fricking Hollywood Studio Chiefs ever get it. "We don't need anymore stinking remakes".

What the hell do you mean? Are you trying to imply that Kurt Russell doesn't look well? He's got a lot of years left in him. He ain't that old.

As for a remake of this movie. What a stupid idea. Whoever came up with the idea oughta start digging his grave.

It's hard to not sound badass when you literally shout every single line you have in the movie.

.

yes you are absolutely right on the "shouting of lines" part. Some posters on these boards like everything else read their critics bias reviews and then use their comments as "talking points". Talk about originality.

Might not be an out and out remake....

From www.empireonline.co.uk

Carpenter On Plissken
As 300 continues to plunder the U.S box-office, one of King Leonidas’ (Gerard Butler) next projects has been given a rumoured push in an unexpected direction. Butler has been heavily linked in to play Snake Plissken in the new re-working of John Carpenter’s sci-fi cult-classic, Escape From New York. Carpenter revealed earlier today that he thought the new movie would be a prequel-like look at anti-hero Plissken, rather than an out-and-out remake of the 80’s original. The director also mentioned that the film would probably concentrate on Snake’s activities before he reaches the confines of Manhatten’s prison walls. Carpenter – who will be an executive producer on the new project – told Suicidegirls.com: “My main involvement is I read the scripts and make sure the character is the same character that we wrote originally. I think that would be cool. My other main involvement in this project is to extend my hand and have a check placed in it.”

Yeah I read about it probably being a prequel. I dunno what generally sucks more, a remake or an unnecessary prequel.
