The real question is, how could I have gone this long without seeing a movie by one of my favorite directors and the director of favorite movie, Brazil?

I actually don't really like the movie very much even though I recommended it, but people either seem to love it or hate it and it definitely has its moments.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
This is a movie about being high. That's it, seriously. If there was some other sub-plot going on, some deeply profound message underlining this movie...I missed it. There's no beginning, middle or end, just a journey that all takes place in and around Las Vegas. There's also no character development. All of this could be forgiven if the scenes were interesting or funny. Unfortunetly, neither of these were present for almost the whole thing. Sure, there was occasionaly a funny scene or line ("We can't stop here, this is bat country!", or perhaps a classic Gilliam set (courtroom), but mostly I was waiting for the movie to end. To add to the nasuea, half of the camera shots were canted and almost none of the angles were normal. But, there was occasionally some good music, and maybe the best thing, a good slew of cameos. This is what I caught: Tobey Maguire, Ellen Barken, Gary Busey, Christina Ricci, Cameron Diaz, Harry Dean Stanton (for a second and a half, but I caught it), Verne Troyer, and Gregory Itzin ("24"). 4/10

I read the book awhile back. It pretty much was the same. A book about being high in a certain environment and coping with it. I enjoyed it though. I actually liked the movie too. Back when I used to get high.

Ok, so Hollywood Video doesn't believe having movies made before 1980!! and Blockbuster was a bust too (no pun intended). So I will be watching Wolf Creek instead of North by Northwest. And I'm very sad about it.

According to wikipedia: "It explores the idea that 1971 was a turning point in hippie and drug culture in America, when the countercultural movement no longer had momentum and its innocence and optimism of the late 1960s turned to cynicism." That said the movie is kind of a mess. I admire it as technical film making, but I wouldn't call it good in the conventional sence.

yes but johnny depps performance as hunter s thompson is damn near perfect. the book obviously is superior, but the movie just adds to the craziness. perhaps not for everyone, especially those who choose not to get high.
gonzo journalism is key. oh yea and damn downfall, its not in any of the video stores around here, and i tried downloading it only to get one that has no subtitles... so i will keep trying... |

Andromeda Strain review should be up later tonight in between finishing it and watching Pan's Labrynth.
And yeah, that was basically how I felt with Fear and Loathing and if it wasn't for some quirky moments from Depp would've been a real stinker. |

Harvey
Now before i watched this film i was anticipating hating it and being pretty bored as i'm not a big fan of b & w films. Pleasantly i was surprised. The film revolves around a man named Elwood P Dowd who just happens to be able to see a 6 foot 3 and a half inch rabbit named Harvey. As you can imagine everyone thinks Dowd is a weirdo and tries to avoid him, the opening scene is his sister having a party and Elwood coming home and scaring everyone away by trying to introduce the invisible Harvey to everyone. This is the last straw for his sister and she decideds to try and get him committed. This leads to quite a few funny scenes involving mix ups and misunderstandings that did bring a few laughs out of me. It also becomes quite touching near the end becoming a story about acceptance and liking peoplle the way they are. The acting is quite superb from James Stewart and a couple of he supporting actorsm wasn't nearly as impressed with Ms Simmons(his sister) or the judge friend thought they were quite poor. The film is well directed with the audience always well aware of were Harvey is and what he is doing despite him being invisible. 6/10 good film Would recommend for fans of the era |

Unforgiven
Clint Eastwood is a masterful director. His contributions to American filmmaking as a director alone could be considered classic films easily. Recently, Eastwood directed the extremely compelling Iwo Jima films "Flags Of Our Fathers" and "Letters From Iwo Jima", but "Unforgiven" is one of his earlier works as a director and it is simply great. I admit to not having seen that many westerns as long as I've been watching movies. but "Unforgiven" was definitely worth seeing and has gotten me interested in seeing more of the genre. Clint Eastwood stars and directs the film, which also stars other great actors such as Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman and Richard Harris. The story is one found in the majority of other westerns: a retired gunslinger comes out of retirement and reteams with an old partner in order to bring down a corrupt cowboy in the Old West. The performances are all first-rate and writing seems spot-on. I continue to be amazed with Eastwood's directing style and am eager to try and find more of the films he's directed. The violence is satisfyingly gritty, just as it should be. In a nutshell, "Unforgiven" is a great film. MY RATING: **** (out of four stars.) P.S. I'm in for the next round.
