Watchmen

NOTE: I watched the 3 hour director’s cut. Not sure if that is drastically different from the theatrical but when I watch movies I usually go for the longer cuts.

I’m actually glad I chose this because it has been on my list for quite some time. I never read the graphic novel so I didn’t have too much of an idea beforehand. I don't know why some people complain about 'being true to the source' which I think was a complaint I heard, when both renditions of just about anything can coexist. It's not like they're butchering a historical event or anything. I just remember leaving my fake post-Dark Knight review in the review thread and thinking it was a lot funnier than other people did.

http://forums.comingsoon.net/showthr...ay#post2562580

Anyways, to go into a synopsis I think would be unnecessary and long winded since this is a movie with multiple storylines and threads. It is also a very ‘adult’ superhero film and although it is very obvious it doesn’t take place in our own ‘universe’ (Nixon being President in the 80s and so on) it’s one that is much more grounded in realistic and contemporary themes than any other mainstream superhero film. Here we have extremely flawed ‘heroes’ pursuing a villain who ultimately may be doing what’s best for our world. There is no moral absolutism in the world of Watchmen; leave that for Spider-Man. We have ‘The Comedian’ murdering civilians, Rorschach hunting and killing people in cold blood, and ultimately they all pay for their crimes no matter on which side of justice they seem to sit. This seemed to me to be a superhero movie without the gimmicks, without the obligatory comic relief, and treated its viewers like adults who can comprehend adult ideas, not geared toward the 13-24 demo. For that I give it major credit.

I’m aware that the director’s cut may be different from what Hollywood recommended, and there were a number of scenes that I felt out of place, for example when the gang kills the old Owl. It didn’t have much bearing on the overall story nor was it ever resolved, so I can imagine that was a cut scene. I can see this as being a good example of a director’s cut for the fans, ones who want to explore the characters and motivations more, yet I can probably assume correctly that the theatrical was more tight-knit, and at clocking in at over 3 hours for the DC that might not be a bad thing.

A- so says Doomsday, definitely better than a vast majority of other superhero films.

My movie was suppose to arrive today, but didn't. It won't arrive tomorrow, obviously, so I might be a day late.

I meant to send it out so it would definitely arrive by today, but on July 4th I had forgotten that no mail would go out.

Doomsday recommendation

Heat

Easily a 5 star movie. Really good recommendation. Was surprised to see so many well known actors in it. Very good acting. Wish it had some extras on the dvd like deleted scenes or anything.

The shooting scene outside of the bank was one of my favorite parts in movie. Intense is a good word for it. I felt like the De Niro's daughters scene where he finds her in bathtub, was sad but i didnt feel too much for her cause they didnt build up natalie portman's character much and didnt see her much in movie but i understand why its there. Her parents dont love each other any more and they didnt focus on that much which is understandable cause its more of a story of 2 characters and didnt want to take that out of main picture. A thief and Law man.

plot no spoilers
Its about a group of thief's that want a easy life but they focus more on 2 particular characters in the movie. Main person in charge of group of thief's and the head person in charge on the law.

plot with minor spoilers
It's a great study of the two main characters who are the focus of this L.A. crime story. Al Pacino is the dedicated, highly driven, chief detective who is so obsessed with his job, that it has a devastating effect on his family life. He lives daily with the atrocities he sees on the streets and cannot detach himself from them at home. Robert De Niro is also highly dedicated and driven when it comes to his work, but he is on the opposite side of the law. He is a brilliant master thief, leading a crew of equally dedicated partners to some masterful heists that pay off big. He is the type though, who is detached, His theory is to never get involved with anything or anyone you can't walk away from when you have to.

Im in for next round.

If it's not too much trouble Jibbs, can we go like this for the next few weeks?

If you have an odd number of people for a round you can throw me in it, that way you aren't doubling up. I can always make time to watch a movie. However if there's an even number you can sit me out. The last few rounds I've either been late or made it by the skin of my teeth since I've been pretty busy lately, so until I come back with full force and can really invest some time into my hobbies then just make me like the film club red shirt.

I Love You Phillip Morris (2009)
I Love You Phillip Morris was met with commercial indifference when it hit theaters a couple years ago and for a number of reasons. For one thing, it had one of the worst titles ever given to a motion picture, a title that seems to imply that someone is profession their love of a cigarette conglomerate even though the movie itself is something more like a version of Catch Me if You Can but with a lot more anal sex. The film’s commercial woes might have also had to do with the fact that it stars Jim Carey (a turn-off for edgy audiences) while also having lots of said anal sex (a turn off for non-edgy audiences) and consequently the thing never really found any audience. I’d like to say that the movie is some sort of lost gem, but it’s actually a fairly uneven film with a handful of charms but also a handful of flaws.

On one hand, the film’s story (which is, amazingly, based on true events) is pretty wild and unformulaic, it kept me guessing what was going to happen next the whole way through. The thing is, this unformulaic nature can also be a detriment, the film has kind of an odd structure where we don’t even meet the titular Phillip Morris until damn near half way through the movie. I also didn’t much like Jim Carey’s performance here, which skewed much to close to the broad performances that he gives in his mainstream comedies and it didn’t fit in particularly well in this otherwise realistic film about a real person. Overall I’d peg this one up as a moderate success, I liked it while I watched it but I suspect I’ll be forgetting it quickly.

Shame

"We're not bad people, we just come from a bad place." Brandon (Fassbender) is a very private person. He does his job well and takes the subway to and from work. He doesn't have many close friends, but that fits his life style. Brandon is an extreme sex addict. He lives his life how he wants until his sister Sissy (Mulligan) shows up unannounced. He does his best to hide his addiction from her, but somethings aren't that easy. First of all I have to say that this is a really good movie. That said it's not easy to watch. Fassbender is amazing in this and I have no idea why he didn't get nominated. I'm guessing because the movie is NC-17 and there is a lot of sex and nudity. That aside watching him struggle with his addiction with few words is really mesmerizing. I can compare this to "Drive" in the style and the pacing, few words but powerful actions. Brandon is one of the most unlikeable characters I have seen lately but the entire time you really want him to change and you end up sympathizing and identifying with Sissy through out most of the movie. Movies that polarize you like that are an adventure to watch and you seem to get more out of it. All that said I do recommend this. Overall, A great but hard movie to watch, very emotional.

Sorry this is late

Au revoir les enfants

As can be predicated from the title, Au revoir les enfants is a French film, one revolving around a boarding school in Nazi-occupied France in 1943. The film focuses extensively on the relationship between two boys, Julien (Gaspard Manesse) and Jean (Raphaël Fejtö). Jean is new to the school, and is at first picked on by some of the kids. Overtime though, he and Julien begin to form a strong friendship, though there relationship is tested by the boys past and the political climate of the time.

Writer/director Louis Malle uses a very reserved style throughout the film. He does not rely on gimmicks or tricks, he simply allows the story to unfold. As much as I respect that style of making movies, it did make the first third of the film a little hard to get into. Not that the first third was bad or anything, in fact it was on the whole well made, it's just that it took me a little while to really get into the story. I did however consistently appreciate the tone of the film. By showing the day to day routine of the characters, their boarding school feels like a real place where people actually live. This, combined with the historical context, led to me being really immersed in the film's setting.

The film's story eventually really grabbed me too. Once the film began to really focus on Julien and Jean's relationship, I found myself becoming very invested. I enjoyed watching their relationship grow from unease and distrust to eventually becoming a heartfelt friendship. I also became really attached to these characters, and no small part thanks to the performances from actors Gaspard Manesse and Raphaël Fejtö. The story hits it's peak though at the climax which is one of the most thrilling and heartbreaking scenes I've seen in any film for a long time. Despite the fact that little music or stylistic devices are used, the story is so engrossing that it doesn't need any assistance in creating drama.

The first third is a little too cold, and I feel the supporting cast could have used more development, but overall, Au revoir les enfants is a great film, one which I look forward to re-visiting eventually. It's well-made, well acted, interesting, and features one of the most moving endings I've seen to a film in a long time.

Rating: A-
