Playtime (1967)
After having seen three of his four and a half films, I feel like I’ve given Jacques Tati more than a fair chance to impress me, but after seeing and not particularly enjoying his supposed magnum opus I’m going to have to say that I’m just not a fan of the guy. When he made Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday, Tati invented a sort of unassuming pantomime which was admittedly quite unique, but it seems like he spent the rest of his career doing more of the same except on increasingly large and elaborate sets. It got so out of control that he finally made Playtime, the most expensive French film ever made, and shot it on 70mm. Only a Frenchman would think it was a good investment to put that much money into a plotless experiment like this based around a handful of somewhat interesting but not exactly funny visual gags, and sure enough the movie bombed and bankrupted the guy.

Granted, Tati’s brand of subtle slapstick (consider that phrase, “subtle slapstick”) is something that can’t really be found anywhere else in cinema, but I sort of got the point two movies ago. Also, this film has some of the most bizarre pacing, there’s no central narrative driving you through it so you pretty much watch it for the visuals. These interesting pantomime gags to come at you ever two minutes or so, but there’s a whole lot of nothing in between. If these gags were really transcendentally amazing rather than somewhat interesting, that might have worked, but for what they are they don’t necessarily feel like they’re worth the wait. By the film’s second half I was pretty actively bored. What we’re left with is a real oddity of a film where extensive production values are put towards something that doesn’t feel remotely “epic,” I don’t begrudge the film for trying to do something offbeat but I certainly didn’t enjoy it.

I'm not defending it, but supposedly there are many intertwining storylines going on that are all visual. So if you were to watch it many times or follow one character you'd see that there was something inbetween the gags. Actually, there's very much going on.

I've heard great things about "Playtime" but have yet to see it, definitely on my list.

Oh there was certainly something like that going on, I just didn't care.

Lawrence of Arabia

David Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia" chronicles the experiences of British soldier T.E. Lawrence (Peter O' Toole) as he helps the Arabs in their revolt against the Turks in the Arab desert during World War I.

This film is an epic in every sense of the word. From the massive 3 hr. and 48 minute runtime to the expansive canvas the story takes place on, there's always a big feeling to it, and I quickly got wrapped up in that feeling.

I appreciated how even though this can be classified as a war film, it still takes the time to be more meditative, and it also really does a good job of delving into Lawrence as a character and his conflicting emotions about the situation he's in. As a result, O' Toole gives a fantastic performance. If the opening titles are to be believed, this was his first film role, which makes it even more impressive.

Yet I did find this movie to have its' dull/slow-moving moments, which is to be expected from a movie so long. Still, I was involved by enough of it and the acting was strong enough for me to say it was well worth the watch.

***1/2 /****

And I'm in for the next round.

Doomsday

Looked at your post in harry potter section and you just had the last 3 left? I put that on list cause think the harry potter series is very good, especially towards the end.
Also, if watchmen is your pick. Try to see the directors cut version.

Watchmen

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Hard Candy

Trust

Up in the Air

Ill take Heat, noticed some really good actors in there
