This is becoming one big tease.

Mitch Hurvitz's Arrested Development Update
Source: Edward Douglas
February 27, 2009

It's always hard being the first panel of any comic convention, but WonderCon kicked off with a full room, as fans of Mitch Hurvitz's Emmy-winning show "Arrested Development" were given a chance to see a first taste of his new animated show "Sit Down, Shut Up," which will premiere on FOX at 8:30 PM on April 19. Before they went to questions from the audience, the moderator asked about the much-anticipated movie based on "Arrested Development" that has been discussed a lot both by Hurvitz and the cast of the show.

Before Hurvitz could give a serious response, Will Arnett, who provides one of the voices for the new show, joked, "We are dangerously close to confirming that… we have read the rumors on the internet."

"Here's what's going on with the movie," Hurvitz told the audience of his fans. "Everyone goes off and has careers and that kind of thing, so it's been a little challenging to schedule everybody together, but everyone who has agreed to make this movie has agreed to make this movie, and we're going to make the movie. I haven't written it yet, so I'll be accepting pitches. We're determined to do this."

"It was a great joy and privilege, all kidding aside, to do a show that took risks and with such a wonderful cast and wonderful writers," he continued. "For us, it's irresistible. Here's an interesting thing about it. When we did the show, one of the things that really made it work is that we didn't hold ourselves up to any standard. We got a lot of positive critical recommendations, but we even kind of ignored those and just did what was funny to us, and kind of remained the underdog in a great way. It was very clear early on that we weren't going to be a big hit, so it really was a labor of love. Now suddenly, there is a bar to hit. I think the key to this is once we get as many pieces as we're going to, which appears we have, we'll just dive in and have fun and see if we can create the same thing. But we're excited about it."

Are you looking forward to this movie happening? If so, let us know what you think of the latest developments in the comments below.

This is getting ridiculous. Either do it or don't; I'm just tired of hearing all this "will they, won't they" drama.

They really can't help it when every Joe askes them the same thing every day.

It's really the websites' fault for picking them up every time

Not Really sure where they said they "weren't" going to do the movie in that article?? Just sounded like a vague update on the movies status to me except for Will Arnett's joke about confirming it. Maybe there's just not any news, they were there to promote Hurvitz' new show, not announce anything about AD. BTW, can't wait to rewatch the whole series on DVD (best Christmas gift my wife has ever given me), hopefully if this thing starts shooting in the summer it will be out in 2010.

It’s been speculated about so often that we’ve even started to see rumours about it on the back of cereal boxes but, after false alarms galore, Mitch Hurwitz has finally, officially, started work on the screenplay for the long-awaited Arrested Development movie.

Hurwitz, the creator of one of the greatest, most complex and downright barmy sitcoms of all time, will also direct the movie, which should see the continuing adventures of the deeply dysfunctional Bluth family.

The fact that the scripting stage has been announced indicates that the entire original cast has agreed to come back for the movie version, which had been a sticking point for Hurwitz, who had previously said that the movie wouldn’t happen unless the entire principal past – Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, Portia De Rossi, Michael Cera, Jessica Walter, Jeffrey Tambor, Tony Hale, Alia Shawkat, and David Cross – returned.

Previously, it had been reported that Cera, whose movie career has been hugely successful post-series, had been the only hold-out, but although nothing’s official, it would seem that he’s back on board now. And, frankly, that’s simply tremendous news.

Hurwitz will co-write the screenplay with James Vallely, who was co-executive producer on the TV show before it was cancelled after three increasingly brief seasons. Imagine, who produced the show and lent Hurwitz its big boss, Ron Howard, as narrator, will co-produce the movie, along with Fox Searchlight. Let’s hope that the film division of Fox treats Arrested Development better than their TV counterparts.

He's just starting the script now? I had sort of been under the impression he already had a script for a film neatly tucked away somewhere.

This is turning into one of those projects that lingers and lingers, and anytime an actor does press for a new film he/she hints at Hurwitz wanting to do it, having ideas, but never seems to be fully in development. We'll see what Bateman has to say as he does press for "Couples Retreat."

I have a friend getting a masters in behavioral psychology, and I'm very close to convincing him to put "analrapist" on his cards.

Speaking exclusively with ComingSoon.net on Sunday at the press junket for When in Rome, Will Arnett confirmed that an Arrested Development feature film should go into production sometime this year.

"I'm so glad you asked that," joked Arnett, who has been questioned about the series' fate since it went off the air in 2006. "It's very refreshing. We are working on the movie right now, yeah... We don't have a completed script yet, but it's forthcoming and we're going to make the movie this year."

When asked if he thought the cameras would actually roll before year's end, Arnett seemed resolute.

"That's the plan," said the actor in earnest, before deadpanning, "We're hoping once Jason Bateman gets out of rehab. I think that we're going to start shooting. Oh, was I not supposed to...? Please don't air that."

I'll get excited when the first filming reports come in. This isn't the first time somebody has said something like that.

I just hope that the script is not going to be written to cater to the mass audience. Most people won't get it.

While it's obviously nothing official, this is looking more and more likely.
