'Arrested Development' film gets closer
Mitch Hurwitz, Ron Howard ink deals for feature treatment

The "Arrested Development" feature has moved closer to reality, with Mitch Hurwitz and Ron Howard reportedly closing deals for the long-gestating project from Imagine and Fox Searchlight.

The possible migration of the critically acclaimed but short-lived Fox series to the big screen has been a hot topic among fans for the past year. Speculation has been fueled by cast members of the show, including Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Jeffrey Tambor, who have been frequently quoted in interviews that a feature adaptation is in the works.

Hurwitz, who created and exec produced the Emmy-winning series, is on board to write the film as well as direct with help from Howard. The series, from Imagine TV and 20th TV, was a pet project of Howard, who had a lot to do with its distinct visual style. In the final episode, Howard, playing himself, heard the Bluth TV family's pitch of their story and liked it for a movie.

Good. I would start re-watching the show, but I went through the entire series in a 3/4 day period back in the beginning of August.

Update!

Quote:
Bateman on the Arrested Development Movie
Source: Scott Huver
December 4, 2008

For far too long, Jason Bateman just couldn't get "Arrested." Since the untimely cancellation of the cult favorite series "Arrested Development," which aired on Fox from 2003-2006, Bateman has continued to express an interest in reviving the series as a feature film. And finally last month, Bateman's co-star Jeffrey Tambor confirmed the much-discussed movie was a likely go, with series creator Mitch Hurwitz and executive producer Ron Howard reportedly inking deals with Fox Searchlight shortly thereafter.

ComingSoon.net got the update on the "Development" developments from Bateman:

ComingSoon, net: Will it be a relief when you actually start filming the "Arrested Development" movie so that people will stop asking you about it?
Jason Bateman: I don't mind talking about it! I'm as big a fan of it as they are. So I feel sort of fortunate that I'm able to give them information on it. I would want them to give me information on it if they had it. I can say that we're looking better than ever. There are just a few more conversations to be had with some cast members to see if they want to be a part of it. Once we get the head count we'll be able to go forward with it and hopefully start shooting in the summer.

CS: Is the story already on paper?
Bateman: I don't think so. I know that Mitch has a couple of ideas, but he's really waiting to nail it down until he knows exactly who's going to be involved.

CS: Do you see having Michael Cera and your relationship in film as something crucial? I thought that was one of the more important parts of the show.
Bateman: Sure. It's not obviously my decision to make. It'll be Mitch's, but there are so many different ways to go with it just based on it being an ensemble. I can't wait to see what he cooks up.

I cant wait...... it already tops my list for big movies next year. If it even comes out next year, if they shoot next summer it might actually be in 2010, but still. I can't imagine them making this if the whole cast isnt back.

I'm excited, but I'm worried some of them won't come back, now. If I could only choose one of them to NOT come back, I would have a hard time choosing, that's how much it worries me. (I guess I would pick Lindsey)

yeah, but Lindsey reflects off of Tobias. Some of them arent that funny by themselves, but they help make someone else funny. Like Maebe, shes kind of funny, but George Michael, Tobias, and Lindsey would be less funny without her. I feel the same way about Lucille, she does get some laughs for herself, but she is mostly a catalyst for the rest of the family.

I dont think I could pick. I guess if Cera doesnt want to come back it would be ok. We would just miss out on the cousin love.

More talk on the movie...

Arrested Development Movie Update
Creator talks about the status of the script and if Michael Cera will return.
by Eric Goldman

January 14, 2009 - No one was surprised when Mitch Hurwitz, creator of Arrested Development, was asked about the status of the Arrested Development movie at the Television Critics Association press tour yesterday, including Hurwitz himself – after all, he was sitting on stage with Jason Bateman and Will Arnett, the former Arrested stars who will be voice performers in Hurwitz's new animated series, Sit Down, Shut Up.

Regarding an Arrested movie, Hurwitz said, "We have a deal with Fox Searchlight," before adding, "We have a story – which is Valkyrie meets Hotel for Dogs." Hurwitz said they were currently working on locking in the cast and remarked, "I'm really optimistic. We're getting close."

After the panel, I was one of a smaller group of journalists who spoke to Hurwitz, and we asked him the status of securing Michael Cera for the film, who has been more reluctant than others to commit to returning to play his character in the Arrested Development movie. Said Hurwitz of Cera potentially returning, "I hope so. I hope so. It's a big priority."

Asked if he had a way to rework the story, should Cera not come back, Hurwitz replied, "Well, I haven't written the story, truthfully. The Valkyrie thing was truly just a ruse!" Hurwitz explained that when it came to writing the script, "I do want to wait until I know who's in it, because it won't be like a big paying job, this movie. So it's not something I want to do on spec. I kind of want to know that we're making this. We're working on it."

Hurwitz added, "I will say about Michael Cera – he is a very, very smart guy. He's a very thoughtful guy. I remember when we were casting for Arrested, the TV show, and I'd seen him in a pilot years earlier, so I set out to get him. He was only 14 at the time. I Said, 'Let's get that kid. I think his name is Michael Cera. I think he lives in Canada.' I'm waiting and waiting to hear back, and after about three weeks I hear, 'Michael Cera responded to the script.' And I felt like, 'I didn't realize that was a step,' you know? But it gave me big respect for him, because it was like, you're not just some whore. You want to read the script, you want to understand the character. This is a young boy! So he's making smart decisions for himself… but I hope this will be one of them!"

I'm going to pass out, and when I awake, this film needs to be a reality. Why not just leave the damn DVD under my pillow, okay? Thanks God, I now believe in miracles and anything else you tell me is true, because this is all I ever wanted.

Yeah.

I would love to see an AD film as I've pointed out in this thread, but I'm becoming less and less sure that it's actually happening.

I think it will. The two of the bigger stars are on board. It's already been greenlighted. Then again, thats happened before and the plug has been pulled so who knows. I'm still optimistic that this will get made though.

Yeah, I think it will, just might not be soon. I hope it happens, and Cera better return. If not, I'll make do.

'Arrested Development' movie: Tambor says Cera's in

Michael Cera has been the only Arrested Development cast member to shy away from rumors that a film adaptation of Fox's beloved-but-canceled TV series is a go. (It's "more hypothetical than people think," Cera said last week.) But according to Gatecrasher, Cera's on-screen Pop-Pop, Jeffrey Tambor, insisted this morning on Cera's involvement and even threatened some mild grandfatherly discipline: "If I have to call him up and say, 'Get on set right now, young man,' he'll be there," said Tambor. "The movie is going to happen this year, and Michael Cera is on board. Trust me."

'Arrested Development' movie: Cast and crew in talks with Fox Searchlight

Sources tell EW that Fox Searchlight is now making the deals with the cast and crew behind Arrested Development for a movie version of the former Fox comedy series. None of the deals are finished, and it could take some time given that they have to be negotiated with creator Mitch Hurwitz, producers Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, as well as the large cast, which includes the rising star Michael Cera. Hurwitz still hasn't finished a script, but as one source put it, "It's more likely to happen now than it ever has been before." For Arrested fans, that may be good enough...for now.
