I think I know a way we can solve this casting problem. With the exception of George Lazenby all the other Bonds were consider years before they wore the tuxedo. For instance, Roger Moore was considered for Bond back when they were making Dr. No. He was even Ian Flemings original choice. Timothy Dalton was offered the role back when they were making OHMSS, but he declined cause he felt too young and inexperienced. And, let's not forget that Pierce Brosnan was cast as Bond for like a week when they were in pre-production for The Living Daylights.

So, who was considered for Bond when GoldenEye was in pre-production? I'm sure they're being considered again. I remember at the time Mel Gibson was considered but he's too old now.

Brosnan goes back further, he was married to a Bond girl from "For Your Eyes Only" when the producers spotted him and kept him in consideration.
