There is a sound of a man screaming and I have heard it in all the LOTR's, Star Wars and Indie movies along with a few other movies. I think it's called the Wilhelm or something. Does anyone know the origin of this sound effect and why it's used so much?

it comes from "The Charge At Feather River" (1953). It goes like this:
Wilhelm is filling his pipe. Somebody else: Wilhelm! Wilhelm: Yeah, i'll just fill my pipe! Wilhelm is shot in the leg by an arrow. Wilhelm SCREAMS and motion picture history is made. It's the greatest sound effect ever. There are a few fansites for it.

I know I heard it in the Two Towers and I think it's in ROTK. How do I find this sound effect? It's weird how it's constantly being used in movies.

I wonder why it's always used in movies as a sound effect. What made sound editors want to use it?

There is also a single thunder sound that is reused. I'm not sure if it has a name, but if you have recognized it, you know what I'm talking about.

That is so weird, I thought I was the only one who thought a scream was being used over and over.
It's also in Warcraft II or Red Alert or something.

![]() Thats just sick! But the coolest sound effect ever made must be the sound when those seismic (sp?) charges go off in AOTC!

Yeah I hear it all the time too and it drives me nuts. It's not even a very good scream. It's like "YEEEEEEAAAHHHH!!!"
I think it was used in Doom the video game too.

I'll agree with that one. It rocks my sound system when they go off. I always loved the sound effects for Star Wars movies because they are so unique, but they are made with everyday objects that we could do ourselves.

There's also sound effects of a baby crying and laughing that are used over and over.

You know...after reading that Star Wars article I think there is actually two different sounds that we are talking about.
The Star Wars Wilhelm goes "aaaAAAAAHHHhhhh!"...The one I thought (and I think Jibbs is talking about) goes "YEEEEEAAAAAHHHH!!!" kinda like the dude is celebrating but it's used in a bunch of deaths in movies.

Why on earth can't the sound mixers just create their own sound effects, like they do for almost every other single sound (in LOTR for example).
Seems strange that this 'Wilhelm' scream seems to have attracted an almost cult-like following.
