I finished Seal Team Six - wow, you could have a another whole movie about The Battle of Mogadishu (more commonly referred to as Black Hawk Down) with what Howard Wasdin went through that day.
He doesn't mince words when it comes to his frustration about sudden changes of orders, lost targets, politicians, miscommunication, and the Rangers and the Delta Force guys.
He brings it off with an incredible sense of humor despite all the danger he went through.
A good book.

Next I'm probably going to listen to a book I read right after the first TV movie aired in 1979 - Salem's Lot - well I read most of the Stephen King book - yes I read a paperback - I did skip to the first part that was like the movie and kind of skipped all that South American stuff in the beginning.
I'll be listening to the whole thing this time.

Just finished Joe Golem and the Drowning City by Christopher Golden and Mike Mignola. If you like Hellboy, you will like this book (which I thought was a comic book). Not a lot of twists and turns, and everything you'd come to expect from Mignola, sans characters from Hellboy.

Up next, I'm going to tackle Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood.

" A Still Life With Crows" by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. If you haven't read the Pendergast novels by these 2, you're missing out on a unique character......

Finished Salem's Lot - good to go through that one again.
I think that's one of the few books where he does seem to do his rambling on on a tangent, but in this book he is actually filling in story information.

Next I am going to listen to Monster Hunter International by Larry Correia
It's a book about a man who pushes his boss out a 14th story window (apparently due to the boss being "insufferable") he wakes up in the hospital with bad memories of the incident - and an unusual job offer...because monsters are real.
This is book one of a series I picked up on sale.

I've finished "The Snow Queen" by Joan D. Vinge, bringing my Hugo Count to 57.

Next I will be reading "Ubik" by Philip K. Dick.

Finished "Ubik" by Philip K. Dick. Amazing book. Another curious ending, though...

I will now be reading "A Dance with Dragons" by George R. R. Martin. (Book 5 in the "Song of Ice and Fire" series.)

I am curious about The Name of the Wind, although there's always a hesitance to start on an unfinished series. Besides, I heard that book 2 drops in quality a little, so do let us know how that pans out.

I've just finished Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood. I usually don't finish books I don't like. The fact that I finished this one says something. With that said, however, I thought it was a decent book. It's not as good as Atwood's other effort in speculative fiction, The Handmaid's Tale, but it does bring forward some rather interesting concepts along the way. The writing style isn't for everything, because it jumps back and forth through time, and the PRESENT story line involves a mad man doing a lot of talking to himself. Overall, it was an interesting read.

I am moving on to The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood. It's book two in the trilogy, so that's why.

man i loved oryx and crake. probably my favorite from atwood. haven't read year of the flood though, have it sitting on my night stand waiting however.

and avoid the name of the wind. the way it is told, it is this dude that is the end all be all for everything from love making to fighting to making spells and what not. i couldn't stand it. this guy did everything right, was the smartest kid in the world when he was little, went to a little wizard school, played the white knight in EVERY scene as he won the girl, or one upped the teacher, or something incredibly predictable from the greatest person ever to be born on this earth.

oh and the main character, that is the god's gift to women and all that, is a ginger bearded dude. rothfuss has a huge flowing ginger beard. coincidence?

i will give him one ounce of credit though, as the magic system that is implemented in the book is rather interesting, but it can't carry the book under the weight of rothfuss' massive ego.

rant over. **** name of the wind though. terrible. get into the first law trilogy by joe abercrombie. a bit better.

That's somewhat disappointing to hear. You've just highlighted everything that I dislike about a story – perfect protagonists.

Anyway, Oryx and Crake was good, but I don't think it measured up to The Handmaid's Tale in terms of Atwood's speculative fiction. To accept the premise behind the story, you also have to buy into Crake's explanations for his actions. Sometimes it seems a little forced but, otherwise I thought it was a great read. Like I said, if I finish a book, it's pretty damn good. I just remember having more fun with The Handmaid's Tale.

Finished Monster Hunter International and it was a pretty good adventure book sort of in the same vein as Hellboy. I would listen to the rest of the series based on this one.
Good characters, pretty good action, and an easy, humorous writing style.

Next I think I will be listening to First Grave on the Right a debut novel by Darynda Jones. It is about a part time private eye who is also a Grimm Reaper. She sees the recently dead and has the job of convincing them to go into the light - and to hunt down those who refuse to go to their final reward.
Kind of sounded like Dead Like Me and it was on sale - so I bought it. I just added about 3 more books to my listening list too - so I will be in listening material for a while still.

Just finished reading 1632 by Eric Flint today, and started on 1633 by Eric Flint and David Weber. Great alternate history series. Small town USA in the year 2000 is thrown back in time to central Germany of 1631, the heart of The Thirty-Years War.

Just finished The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood. I liked it a lot better than Oryx and Crake, and I think part of it is due to how this book tied in with its predecessor. I enjoyed the characters here a whole lot more, as oppose to Jimmy and Glenn, who were boastful, perverse, damaged and, for Jimmy, raging mad. I found the characters here much easier to root for, because they were just trying to survive throughout the book.

Moving on to The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick

Just finished The Name of the Wind. For those who were asking, it was a very good book. Definitely one of the better fantasy novels I have read in some time. Definitely one that I would highly recommend.

I am now starting the second book in the series, The Wise Man's Fear.

First Grave on the Right wasn't as good as say, Odd Thomas, but it is along the same lines as those Koontz books.
It was entertaining as the author has a decent sense of humor - not sure I'd go for the second one, but eventually I might - I did like the characters, if not some of the ideas she had.

Next I think I'll try to listen to Panic in Level 4: Cannibals, Killer Viruses, and Other Journeys to the Edge of Science by the same author as The Demon in the Freezer and The Hot Zone Robert Preston.
Those two books were some of the scariest real life books about disease and plague I have ever listened to - much more scary than most serial killer books I've listened to (With probably the exception of The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mob Hit Man which gave me the willies). The reviews aren't too favorable for this book - it sounds like more of a scattered collection of different essays of science. We shall see.

You and FranklinTard can go fight about it. He highlighted a few reasons why he didn't like it, and I am rather wary of it myself. I tend not to like books with characters that never fail at much of anything.

Kvothe (the main character) fails at plenty of things throughout the book. I don't know if this changes in the second one, but I personally thought the first book did a good job of highlighting his struggles throughout.
