Why did the villain "have to be" a deviant gay guy? The last...15 weren't. Why couldn't he just be gay? It doesn't happen often like the Fleming novels.

Exactly, why couldn't he have? But he wasn't "just a gay guy". They introduced him with a scene that was supposed to essentially scare bond with his sexuality.

I think it would freak anyone out who was tied to a chair.

Watched Skyfall again today...didn't hold up as well as I'd hoped.
Well, that's not far. The movie is still highly entertaining and there's a lot of awesome stuff about it, but the flaws stood out a lot more. I like Bardem's performance, but the writers want the villain to be too many different things. The homophobic aspects of the character stood out more this time around and the similarities to The Joker, both in mannerisms and schemes, are also distracting. Speaking of Batman, the third act is very Batman Begins, complete with dead parents and Alfred. I wouldn't mind so much except these points don't really add up to much and just serve as a distraction. The analysis of Bond's past doesn't really mean anything. And I also don't like the way Séverine was treated. She was actually an interesting character before being casually killed off than immediately forgotten. I know a lot of other people have brought these up, but it was only this time they really leaped out at me. I still really like this movie. It's constantly entertaining and Deakins' work is great, it just isn't the Bond masterpiece I thought it was. I'd still give it an A- though. Interesting side note: My two favourite blockbusters of 2012, Skyfall and The Avengers, went down on rewatches, where as my most massive disappointment (The Dark Knight Rises) was actually much better the second time around. I still prefer Skyfall and The Avengers to The Dark Knight Rises, but the gap is much smaller.

Interesting...in Skyfall there's all of the Batman similarities which tie into Bond's past. In the Hitchcock film Marnie, Sean Connery's father is played by Alan Napier, who played Alfred in the Adam West Batman show.
