Little Monsters has about as much to do with Halloween as E.T. does (less even)

Psycho II isn't terrible, but it is laughable in certain scenes.

It's a movie about monsters. How is that not Halloween appropriate? Lots of comedies work well during Halloween season. Young Frankenstein. Ghostbusters. Gremlins. Beetlejuice. If someone is seeking an alternative to scary movies, Little Monsters works pretty well.

I wonder if Neverending will include The Monster Squad in this list.

13 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN! DAY 6: THE MONSTER SQUAD (1987) ![]() Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Wolf Man, and Creature from the Black Lagoon team-up to search for an amulet that'll let them rule the world!!!!! The only people that can stop them are a group of Middle School kids known as The Monster Squad. On the surface, the film is incredibly stupid. I've seen Saturday morning cartoons with better plotlines. But the filmmaking team, which includes Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, Iron Man 3), is clearly a fan of the Universal monster movies. They treat the characters with respect and also do a wonderful job of modernizing them. In some cases, their version surpasses the original incarnation. For example, The Wolf Man is a total badass. He's easily the highlight of the film. They also do a good job of balancing the family-friendly humor with the gothic horror that's required for these monsters. It isn't easy to do and they managed to pull it off. You have to give credit where it's due. But I'm not gonna ignore the flaws either. Monster Squad was obviously made to cash-in on the success of The Goonies. The children characters are knock-offs and very forgettable. They're the main element preventing the movie from being great. Nonetheless, I still recommend it for its excellent treatment of the monsters and the very high entertainment value.

Wolfman's got nards!
Without doubt my most-watched movie leading up to my teens. Every time I was ill and off school (quite often) my dad would rent it out for me. Haven't seen it for a long, long time though. |
