Yes there is a bit of cornball to the early comics but that was also the 60's and the Comics Code Authority - at the same time though, Spider-man #96, 97, 98, and 99 - dealt with some very serious drug issues and did not originally have the Comics Code Authority seal of approval - but they were published without it.
So it's always been a bit of both cornball and seriousness

That'll be in the DC.

The Nixon Administration, believe it or not, requested those issues so they could give it to children at schools. It was propaganda and Stan Lee has admitted that he knew very little about drugs, so he wrote a lot of bull s--t to scare kids.

I remember reading an early issue of AS-M that featured Spidey trying to rescue JJJ's son from a space capsule. It was painful to read. Stan knew even less about the space program than he did about illicit drug use. |

The "druge issues" were written & released in 1971. Kennedy had been dead for almost a decade. It was the Nixon Administration during the era when they made Elvis Presley an honorary DEA Agent. Nixon went hardcore with the drugs propaganda. George Bush, Sr., during the "Say No To Drugs" campaign also sent out those Spidey issues. I remember getting them in my 7th grade Science class. And that was over 20 years after they had been published. They were even more laughable in the `90s.
