I don't dislike them, but neither did much for me. I'll probably give them another shot eventually.

A Serious Man is my favorite film from them.

I've never understood why Kevin Smith enjoys such a cult following. A majority of his films are lazy, banal, and altogether unsatisfying. He uses cheap sex jokes to keep it "edgy".

He's consistant because he never leaves his comfort zone. He makes B-movies with "A" production values. The Coen Bros., on the other hand, have a wider range.

Clerks is relatable. Mallrats is geeky. Chasing Amy has an interesting subject matter. Dogma is a comedy about religion. Red State is a "horror movie" about religion.

But I get what you're saying. His movies are amateur. He's a terrible director. However, he's a talented writer and he connects with people. Plus, he's the only filmmaker that has fully embraced social media and audience interaction and he does it without a filter. So, he's a highly entertaining individual. Personally, I have a lot of issues with him, but I give him the credits he deserves.

I agree that Kevin Smith connects with people but he connects with the lowest common denominator. He doesn't deserve to be in the same room as Tarantino, the Coens or most other A-list directors. He would be nothing without Clerks and that's mediocre on a good day.

That's true to an extent.

It's been a long time since I've seen it, but I remember that I just could not get into the story AT ALL, and on top of that, the way the Coens chose to tell the story (I'm getting at the tone here) just annoyed me so much, that I felt like throwing my shoe at the screen.

Perhaps I'm the only one who thinks the Coen brothers are very consistent. The films are also better on a whole and there are more of them and they are much more diverse.

I liked A Serious Man quite a bit. My mom called it "their masterpiece."

It's a great dark comedy. I'd agree with your mom.

I was kind of weirded out by A Serious Man when I first saw it, but it's kind of grown on me since, I think I should give it another watch.

I didn't finish watching A Serious Man. The comedy didn't work for me. I did, however, enjoy Burn After Reading.
