I recently finished going through the whole series so far and I have some thoughts. Walt is clearly a new man in that segment to open up season 5. I can't say for sure that he's a "good person" now, mostly because I don't think the show's going to go that way, but he certainly isn't the crazy drug lord type person anymore for some unknown reason. For one, he doesn't shave his head anymore, and two, he leaves a $100 tip for the nice waitress.

I'n guessing between now and then he loses everything and becomes a lot more sympathetic.
