Simon is an often underrated character. His relationship with River is definitely one a the strength of the show. It's just hard to rank one character over the other when they all deliver what they bring to the table so well.

I have found they people's favorite characters in this is highly subjective to their own personal taste and experience. And that's a good thing. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I'm more surprised that so many people love River. I don't know, I can't connect with her. I'm with Jayne most of the time on that one. Would I have betrayed the crew and gave her up to the Alliance? No. But I'd want to be rid of them as soon as possible too. River brought trouble to the entire crew, and never ever does the right things at the right time. For example, in Serenity, she really could've started her kungfu moves a lot earlier, saving everybody the trouble of being SHOT AT by reavers. Besides, Book and Wash died for River, and I personally don't feel like that's a fair trade.

My wifey has watched the whole series of Firefly twice and I still have yet to watch it. For the past few months she keeps bugging me to watch it. I check in here after being gone a few months and I find these lists. I'm now convinced. This weekend sounds like the perfect time to start it.

Top ten best and five worst Firefly/Serenity moments

Best moments

10. Shindig - Awesome old dude appears and basically calls the woman mocking Kaylee for being lower-class a slut, and then we see Kaylee finding a social circle where her ship/engine knowledge makes her the star of the show. Very cathartic.
9. War Stories: Malcolm and Wash have a pretty hilarious back and forth about Zoe as if nothing else is going on...while being tortured..
8. Out of Gas: Malcolm's flashback introduction to the Serenity ship. Great ending to an outstanding episode.
7. Serenity the movie: The Operative realizes that the Serenity crew has brought a bunch of Reavers along with them as they entered orbit to the planet the Alliance ships were stationed next to. A great "eff you" comeuppance moment.
6. The pilot: Wash playing with dinosaur toys. Although I found some of Wash's quips to fall flat afterwards, his introduction is hilarious.
5. Serenity the movie - Simon confesses to Kaylee that his biggest regret is not being with her, she mans her gun and then says "Well, screw that, I'm going to live!" Really enjoyed both characters and was rooting for a relationship to happen between them so I greatly enjoyed this.
4. Safe - "The human body can be drained of blood in 8.6 seconds given adequate vacuuming systems" and then the subsequent reaction. The hardest I laughed during the entire series.
3. Serenity the movie: River says "My turn" and then takes out the entire clan of Reavers. Awesome.
2. Safe - Simon realizes he can't convince the villagers not to burn River so he immediately decides to be burned alongside her. The only moment in the series to leave me misty-eyed and very emotionally touched, I can't help but rank it high.
1. Ariel: Jayne betrays the Tams to the Alliance, then faces Malcolm's wrath as Malcolm decides whether or not to kill him. I guess this is technically two scenes but they fit together so I'm combining them. I couldn't believe the series actually went there with a major character betraying the others, I was absolutely enthralled by it and on the edge of my seat.

Worst moments

5. The Message - Tracy flirting with Kaylee on multiple occasions. This is probably a matter of personal preference, but I totally hated Tracy and The Message is my least favorite episode. A lot of this has to do with the fact that I loved and identified with Simon so I didn't like this new rival to his relationship with Kaylee being introduced, so these scenes kind of angered me.
4.Heart of Gold - Inara breaks down crying after finding out her matron friend slept with Malcolm. I'm sorry, weren't you the one who laid down the rules that you would never sleep with Malcolm or any of his crew? And then have slept with multiple other men while Malcolm has pretty much not slept with anyone until now? Just seemed like a moment to make me sympathetic towards a character I didn't care much about that wasn't really earned.
3. The Message - Tracy dies. I actually really disliked the Tracy character (as seen in entry five) since I wanted Simon and Kaylee to be together and he was a rival to that, but I was still dumbfounded by the fact that he apparently died since I'm not sure why Simon couldn't have fixed him, since he's treated worse wounds in the past.
2. Serenity the movie: We see that River is watching as her brother and Kaylee have sex. After spending so much time invested in the incredibly touching sibling relationship between Simon and River (as well as investing in a romantic relationship between Simon and Kaylee) I was pretty appalled that they sort of put on stain on these touching relationships by having River be a voyeur watching her own brother had sex with someone, and I was quite grossed out by the incestuous implications of it.
1. Serenity the movie - Wash dies randomly- I knew it was coming and still felt it was kinda cheap and for shock value only.

Good stuff.

Joss says he killed Wash so he could have a finale where the fans truly didn't know if anyone was going to die. Wash's death was like "I'm crazy! You don't know what I'm going to do next!"
