Yeah, those plastic racks **** you over as soon as you get an oddly shaped case or a boxed set of any kind. They work a lot better for video games, because those have much more standardized cases. You're better off getting an affordable particleboard shelf (I use this one personally). They aren't pretty and they aren't wildly durable either, but you can get a lot of product into a smallish space and can organize them however you want. And if you don't have enough movies to fill one up you can always just use it for books or something.

I have two big shelves.

The second is okay, but it doesn't fit the DVDs too well. Kind of a loose fitting.
