History Channel Makes History! Hatfields & McCoys Break Cable Record.

The premiere of the cable network’s miniseries Hatfields & McCoys drew a staggering 13.9 million total viewers, 4.8 million adults 18-48 and 5.8 million adults 25-54 from 9-11 PM to become the the No. 1 non-sports telecast in ad-supported cable television history. The combined viewership for Part 1′s two airings was 17 million. “With all the success we have had at History, we felt strongly for some time that we should own historical drama, and in true History fashion, we have done it, with — pardon the pun — guns ablazin!,” said History’s president and general manger Nancy Dubuc. Hatfields & McCoys, a three-part, six-hour miniseries starring Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton, tells the true American story of a legendary family feud that spanned decades and nearly launched a war between Kentucky and West Virginia. Part 2 and Part 3 premiere tonight and tomorrow night, respectively. The mini is produced by Thinkfactory Media, with Leslie Greif executive producing, and Costner, Darrell Fetty and Herb Nanas producing. Sony TV is distributing. Hatfields & McCoys had been a passion project for Greif for more than 20 years.

They seem to be covering all the historical bases when it comes to the reasons for the feud - since the actual cause is kind of lost to history.
Of course, it's a drama even if it is made in association with the History channel.

I know quite a bit about it - American History is one of my favorite subjects - especially civil war era.
I've seen (on TV) and read a lot (online) about the feud.

Well, I don't recall where you live but maybe it's an (south )eastern thing - maybe I was more aware of it due to where I live?

I can also recall a few early TV shows that touched on the feud subject (an episode of the Monkees, and a Bugs Bunny cartoon, come to mind).

It's a "clean" version (obvious 'stage grime' on some faces etc), but it's watchable so far.

They played part one again tonight before part two - so I'm betting they will be shown again.
They also repeat after 11pm

Well, it's not really a western (kinda mid-eastern - right about where the Mason-Dixon Line area is ) - but yeah it has hillbillies, guns and frontier justice.

M,...yeah probably one of the better known feuds in American history - among many it is probably the first named - other than....

Hamilton and Burr (who really had it out for each other), The Lincoln County War (was a feud of sorts about trade rights), and The Gunfight at the OK Corral (actually the Gunfight Outside of Silas Fly's Photographic Studio, but the OK Corral sounds better

) and the following Vendetta ride by Wyatt Earp.

There were a few others - mainly due to territory rights or the boiling over of tempers during reconstruction after the civil war.
