There were a ton of really good movies all year long and I had a lot to choose from in order to fill out my top ten, however, there was really only one film with the scope, ambition, audacity, mystery, and top notch execution to be worthy of the top slot and that movie was Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master. When I left the theater after seeing The Master I knew I had just witnessed something amazing but I didn’t think it matched up to Anderson’s There Will Be Blood. Reflecting back on it, I’m not so sure if that’s true. There are images in The Master that I remember vividly, themes that I still think about, and ideas that are positively tantalizing. The movie works as a stylistic exercise, as a character study, as an examination of post-traumatic stress disorder, and as a subtle little riddle. In many ways I’m shocked that the film has been as polarizing as it is. It might not necessarily be a film that makes itself clear to the most mainstream of audiences and I get why it didn’t set the box office on fire, but I feel like film critics and cinephilles should have recognized and appreciated what Anderson was doing.
