Arrow Wii U

NEW YORK/TOKYO (Reuters) - Nintendo Co's "Wii U", packed with innovative TV and video features, will hit U.S. store shelves on November 18 as it plays catch-up with Microsoft and Sony and aims to lure gamers back from the Internet and mobile devices. The first Nintendo home console in six years will allow users to make personal TV and video programming lists and record shows through TiVo and other digital recording services. "It should be the entertainment hub in the center of the house," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales and marketing. The machine, starting at just under $300, will also come with a dedicated "Super Mario" game title.

The original Wii became the world's biggest selling home console shortly after its 2006 launch, with motion-controlled gaming and a slew of software titles that appealed to users beyond traditional gamers. Nintendo hopes that its "TVii" feature will help spruce up demand. It will stream video from Netflix Inc, Amazon.com Inc, Google Inc's YouTube, and Hulu, taking a page from the Xbox. A "GamePad" touch-screen controller can function as a remote control, and that second screen can be used to create personalized program lists. The controller, which enhances the video streaming and gaming experience, helped push its price tag above rival consoles. Sony's PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360 start at $250 and $200, respectively.

tvii or whatever sounds pretty cool, but no way i would buy the red headed step child of the next gen consoles. i'll wait on the big boys to announce theirs.

even then though... might be getting to old to put time into consoles anymore.

I agree with both of you. Too old, too poor.

It's going to be a weird generation, actually. The people who first grew up with video games are getting older and older.

I thought Ninty had pulled off quite a coup by acquiring Bayonetta 2 as a Wii U exclusive but it turns out Sega had all but pulled the plug on it and Nintendo stepped in to save it from the gaming graveyard.

I almost never play video games anymore but I still enjoy reading about the new stuff coming out. Is that weird?

So, basically, this is the Wii but with more video streaming options. And I assume it will be HD content. So... $300 just for that? Nintendo is taking a page out of the Apple handbook.

Pretty much. It's really overpriced for what you're getting. The launch titles aren't even that great either. New Super Mario Bros. U and The Wonderful 101 seem like the only decent ones so far. Not worth the money...right now, at least. But if you're going to buy it, you might as well upgrade for only $50 more. It'll come with Nintendo Land, a black Wii U and a few other things (a stand is also included, I believe).

The controller is essentially a HD DS, you can play any game without needing a TV. Hence the expensive price. I believe an additional controller will cost over £100 ($150) but you can obviously use all the old Wii peripherals so a second main one won't be needed unless the first breaks.

Maybe after a year or two and it has a few titles that I want to play I might consider getting one, but it seems that more and more time is becoming an issue, and I'm not sure I would be able to play it all that much. But even if time wasn't an obstacle, I think Nintendo needs to do a better job developing new IP's for the core gamer and courting 3rd parties. Outside of Zelda (which while I still find to be pretty good, is getting a little stale) and whatever Retro or Monolith Soft might be working on, there isn't all that much they have that I'm interested in.

Anyways, I'm excited to see a new Pikmin game, and ZombiU looks interesting, but that's not enough for me to want to pick one up at launch.

Too bulky. It defeats the purpose.

What I should have said was a HD DS for home use only as I don't think it's designed to be taken outside; the iPad is probably a more relevant comparison.

Some of the retailer reactions have been pretty telling. It might surprise us, so who knows. If it ends up being worth it, I'll probably spring for the Special Edition.

It might be worth it for people who have their share their consoles.
