Yeah, I felt a lot of barrier when I was reading Vinge. It's as if there is a cloud above me that I couldn't penetrate. Well, I guess I will just mark it up as a book that I just didn't get.
After trying to read those two books, I decided to move on to the pile of comic books that I have yet to touch. I started off with Sweet Tooth Volume 5: Unnatural Habitat. I must recommend this comic book series to anybody who is a fan of post-apocalypse and/or The Walking Dead (the comics, mind you). The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world where most humans have contracted a certain disease and have died out. Right around the time when the disease was first detected, however, animal-human hybrid children started to be conceived, and they were born to be completely immune to the disease. The central character is a boy named Gus, an average boy with deer antlers. He lives in the middle of the woods with his father, cornered off from the entire world and living off the land. One day, Gus' father dies from delirium, and he is picked up by a man who then takes him to a sanctuary for children just like himself.
The story packs a lot of emotional punch and, in a way, reminded me of The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It starts off the same way, I guess, with a boy and a father figure of sorts. However, the story transforms into its own thing soon afterwards. I see this comic book being turned into a TV show, if they can somehow figure out how to make animal-human hybrid children look less silly on screen. Anyway, it is one of the few comic book series that I follow, and I am a big fan of Jeff Lemire.
