I won't lie. I was rooting for Johnny Depp that year. I remember when we did the Reelies that year I was the most vocal Johnny supporter. Sean Penn was incredible in Mystic River and the rightful winner, but Johnny was snubbed so many times throughout the `90s that I wanted him to have the victory. Some people were feeling the same about Bill Murray and Lost in Translation.

Nah, it IS his career best. As someone pointed out, if Lincoln hadn't been released in 2012, Jackman would've won, and for good reason.

Or if Daniel Day-Lewis hadn't connected. He definitely took a big risk with that voice. Let's keep in mind that he hasn't won an Oscar for every movie he's made. He hasn't even won every Oscar that he was nominated for. The man lost to Adrian Brody one year. So, anything was possible. The point is, Hugh Jackman was the second favorite in the category.

Am I the only one who thought Day lewis was great but not amazing? Dotn get me wrong he did the role justice and channeled lincoln very well but I felt the performance was a bit over hyped. I have to see les mis yet to judge jackman but from clips and trailers he looks amazing in it. I actually thought Denzel's performance in flight was strong but got no love.

Glad Django, Argo and Skyfall won something. I can safely say I will never watch Lincoln, Les Mis or Silver Linings Playbook as they do not appeal to me what so ever but well done to them none the less

yeah thats how I felt last year with the artist but this year besides amore and beast of the southern wild the rest of the best picture movies appealled to me greatly. Lincoln was good for what it wat but I feel like the name and star power is what drove the film as oppose to the film itself being honored. |

Eh, I don't know about that. Even though Phoenix railed against awards shows I think they'd still recognize that he gave the best performance last year (after Day Lewis, apparently).

My question is why did he bother going? Just so he could look grumpy and above it all?

So he'll look like a good sport, which could pay off the next time he's nominated.

Phoenix's performance was great, sure, but for me personally, it was undercut by the fact that the character was so damn hard to like. Also by the fact that I found the film itself disappointing and frustrating.

Seth MacFarlane may have surpassed Chris Rock as the most controversial Oscar host in recent memory. All sorts of special interest groups have been criticizing MacFarlane all week for being sexiest, racist, and anti-Semitic. Most seem to be focusing on the "We Saw Your Boobs" song and Ted's appearance. Any thoughts on the controversy?

I don't get the anti-antisemitism accusations. Well, I sort of get them if only because MacFarlane has a strange habit of using the word "Jew" as a punchline in his comedy, but in the bit in the Oscars Mark Whalberg clearly calls Ted an "idiot" for saying what he was saying and adds "I'm not doing the sequel with you" at the end in case people don't get who the butt of the joke is.
As for the misogyny accusations... meh. I get where they're coming from and some of the jokes they're complaining about were quite hacky, but they're pretty par for the course as far as MacFarlane's comedy goes, and given that we all ask for edgier Oscar hosts I'd rather people not attack the host for actually being "edgy."

Agreed, I also don't get why people said the infamous Onion tweet was racist. Last time I checked the c-word didn't pertain to a specific race, unless people like that think that any joke made towards a person of color is automatically racist which wouldn't surprise me in the least.
But seriously, there's no pleasing people. Anne Hathaway and James Franco? Too bland. Hugh Jackman? Too much music. Chris Rock? Too offensive. Ellen? Not funny enough. As they say, it really is the most thankless job in the industry. And I'm not even a big Seth MacFarlane fan but I thought he did fine, the edgy humor was a hit which is obvious just based on peoples reactions. Whenever people complain about someone and their offensive humor and lead off with 'first of all, it wasn't funny,' then you know for damn sure it was funny.

Yeah I agree, calling a child with any kind of swear word is offensive.
They know they screwed up, especially that one

One word thrown out was 'racist' among all the others which doesn't make much sense.

I don't agree with the racist part. I haven't heard that... But saying the C-word no matter what to a child is out of line.

I think the problem with a lot of Oscar hosts is that their jokes are irrelevant. The Oscars honor the best of the year. What does "we saw your boobs" have to do with any of the nominated movies? Was there even boobs in any of those movies this year? What makes Billy Crystal stand-out is that all his jokes are directed at the nominees and current state of Hollywood. Just look at his monologue from 1990:
VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:
Or 1991 VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:
Or 1998 VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:
Or 2004 VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:
That's largely why people were upset.
