Congrats, you are the first person to ever feel bad for Clooney for anything.

I'm sure a few people felt bad for Clooney when he was on Facts of Life.

It wasn't a good night for Steven Spielberg. Lincoln received 12 nominations and lost in 10 categories.

Spielberg's track record with the Oscars is legendary.
He was snubbed for Jaws and Color Purple. Color Purples was nominated for like 11 Oscars and won nothing. Saving Private Ryan lost Best Picture. And now, there's Lincoln. Although... Raiders, E.T., Jurassic Park, and Schindler's List did pretty well. And yes, Doomsday, this is the first time someone has won an acting award for a Spielberg movie.

Pretty good Oscars. I really need to see Life of Pi. I was hoping Silver Linings Playbook would get more love but oh well.

So you're saying Spielberg wasn't the favorite to win Best Director? How quickly history is re-written.
Yeah, it's crazy to think Jennifer Lawrence was the only winner. Then again, Harvey Weinstein had to satisfy his long-time pal Quentin Tarantino. If Django had been out of the equation, Silver Linings would have pulled off a few upsets.

I thought McFarlane was great; I'd say he was Gervais-lite with a lot of his material, which is probably about as far as you can go at the Oscars. I don't reckon they'll ask him back though. I could make out one old guy in the audience when Shatner was doing his shtick at the beginning who was thinking "wtf is this?"
A few things I took away from the ceremony: - George Clooney remains the coolest man on Planet Earth. - Zoe Saldana remains the hottest woman. - Joseph-Gordon Levitt is my hero. - Shirley Bassey still got it. - Jaws theme to hurry people off stage was hilariously mean. |

I liked seth too but I think the opening monologue dragged a tad by maybe 6 - 8 minutes. Way too much singing though if Im to be perfectly honest, where I thought Adele and the bond sonds were warranted but the whole tribute to musicals was kinda uneeded if you ask me. Not to mention the blatant lip synscing by zeta jones. If they are gonna have a tribute like that though why not have a grease thing as well? Heck get Cruise out there to sing dead or alive.
I love to all kinds of heck that Argo won best picture but I keep feeling like it was more of an apology award because of the praise the film has been getting the past 2 months. It almost makes the Academy look stupid to where they gave him best picture but not even a best director nod. |

Yeah, the whole "tribute to musicals" thing was pretty pointless. Also, while I enjoyed Seth as a host, his bit as Ted was painfully unfunny. I also wasn't crazy about the cast of The Avengers. Their jokes felt very forced.

What I find interesting is that no film dominated last night. Argo won Best Picture. Life of Pi won Best Director. Lincoln won Best Actor. Silver Linings won Best Actress. Django won Supporting Actor. And, Les Mis won Supporting Actress. They spread the wealth. I can't think of any other Oscars where that happened. It just comes to show that 2012 didn't have a single film that truly stood out. Even in the technical categories there seemed to be a split among the winners.

Most people in America didn't see that movie. She's irrelevant. Besides, giving Jennifer Lawrence the Oscar was the best decision the Academy has made in a long time. Everything she did before, during, and after the Oscars has gone viral. Argo may have won Best Picture but the true star last night was Lawrence. |

Irrelevant? Hardly the right word for it. Lawrence is a talented actress, but the performance by Riva is unparalleled. I've seen both films, so I'm sure the Academy has, too.

Goes to show how sometimes the academy plays it safe. I mean by that by when was the last time the oscars winners actually shocked somebody? I expected hathaway and Day lewis to wins months ago. Lawerence is such a hottie and the fact she seems like a normal girl is even more of a turn on but she was defienetely the "safe" pick.

If a tree falls and no one is around, does it make a noise? It's the same concept here. Amour didn't click with Americans and will be forgotten in 6 months. In addition, it's a foreign film made by old people. Hollywood has nothing to benefit from it. Jennifer Lawrence, on the other hand, is a big movie star and attracts young people to the Oscars. Everything she did last night went viral. She's the star & highlight of last nights Oscar. They made the right call.

You're talking about bureaucracy and benefits, not quality. Silver Linings Playbook is a solid film, but the same argument could be made that it'll be forgotten in 6 months.
I won't pretend to know everything about how the Oscars work (or even the nonsense that goes on behind the curtain), but I do know when someone has been robbed, and this was it. Keep in mind that I'm speaking STRICTLY about who deserved it, not what will bode well for the industry, which is something vastly different. Last edited by Justin; 02-25-2013 at 03:43 PM. |
