Daniel Day-Lewis seems like a lock to win his third Academy Award for Best Actor. This is unprecedented and provides a news peg for this debate. We can talk about actresses another day.
I'm not quite ready to rank them, but here are some names I think should be considered: Day-Lewis Robert De Niro Humphrey Bogart Marlon Brando Gregory Peck Paul Newman Jimmy Stewart Al Pacino Dustin Hoffman Clint Eastwood Robert Redford Kirk Douglas Cary Grant Jack Nicholson Sidney Poitier Harrison Ford Peter North Clark Gable Gary Cooper Spencer Tracy Lawrence Olivier Sean Penn Robert Duvall |

You'd better revise that title - because "Mr Technical" (ME) is gonna nit pick you to death about not narrowing the focus - "great actor EVER" includes every actor back to about 1200 BC.
Just ask Vader how picky I am with such a wide open category name

Well played
![]() I have an abundance of free time though - and I will take a look around to try to find some examples ![]() ![]() Right off the top of my head though - John Wilkes Booth was considered one of the finest actors of his day. ![]() This is under "General Movies" though, come to think of it So we'll use that as a starting point - If it were under "Celebrities" then we could dig back to stage actors

Not everyone will agree with everyone els's choices - those two are capable of delivering strong performances in my opinion and have contributed quite a few very successful performances as well - maybe not the best ever, but darn good.
And let's face it - every actor has made a clunker at one time or another - it is unfortunate that those may be their best remembered. I would add Lionel Barrymore as I am fond of his performances (and he is a Barrymore) and for that matter, John Barrymore. I also forgot Lon Chaney - the man of 1000 faces, Sydney Greenstreet, and Peter Lorre (also some classic performances of quality) I always liked Frank Morgan, Burt Larr, Ray Bolger, and Ray Walston as well

Should DDL win it would hardly be unprecedented. Jack Nicholson has 3 Oscars. So does Meryl Streep. Katherine Hepburn also won 3 and Walter Brennan holds the record for most acting Oscar wins with 4, albeit all of them were for Best Supporting Actor.

Were we just talking about Award winners? I didn't use that as a criteria just as a note
but that's obvious

He would be the first actor to win three Best Actor awards. He's currently tied with Spencer Tracy, Fredric March, Gary Cooper, Marlon Brando, Dustin Hoffman, Tom Hanks, Jack Nicholson, and Sean Penn.

Jack Nicholson is inarguably a great movie actor. But having done little theater or performed not much Shakespeare or Sophocles, it's a jump ball as to whether or not he can be considered a great actor.
Laurence Olivier, on the other hand, is probably the greatest actor ever to appear on film. Maybe a small handful of others, say Alec Guinness and John Gielgud, maybe even Kenneth Branagh. |

Jack Nicholson was given an apprenticeship at The Players Ring theater, in the mid 50's although I'm not sure how long he was there.
Also, I have been considering adding Groucho Marx because of his consistent performances, but I haven't really seen too many of his non-Marx Brothers appearances - I think I am going to track as many down as I can though - he was definitely one of the greats
