Argo has a fighting chance. Life of Pi is losing steam... although it will dominate technical awards.

Or maybe it makes the HFPA look bad. They jumped the gun and gave the award to the movie which seemed like a big deal in October rather than the one which is in the lead now. Besides, the HFPA are notorious star****ers, of course they're going to give the award to the A-list actor turned director rather than the lowly behind the scenes people he was up against.

This is the organization which gave that award to Sweeney Todd over Juno in 2007, they're partial to musicals.

The Oscars don't have the best track record with "independent" thinking. I'm surprised you're on the Oscars side. Do you really hate Ben Affleck that much?! I don't think he deserves the wins. Kathryn Bigelow is getting screwed because Zero Dark Thirty is too controversial. But I also don't think Affleck should have been snubbed. If Affleck, and Argo, continue to win awards, it's gonna reflect badly on the Oscars. They're definitely keeping a close eye on the Producers and Directors Guild Awards. Those two have the potential to taint this years Oscars. The Screen Actors is probably the only one Argo won't win. That one is a sure bet for either Silver Linings or Les Miserable.

Argo is alright, but I feel like the five nominees they did pick were more deserving (granted, I haven't seen Amour yet, but Hanake is an important filmmaker who deserves to finally be recognized). Spielberg was getting in no matter what. Russell did a great job keeping SLPB together while Lee and Zeitlin both made visual extravaganzas that transcend whatever problems might exist in the respective scripts their working with. If someone was going to displace one of those five I would have rather it been Bigelow or even Tarantino than Affleck, I have problems with ZDT, but she brought more to the table than Affleck did to Argo. In short, there just wasn't room for Affleck in the lineup, that's what happens when you make a good but not great movie like Argo.

Agreed. I have loved Gone Baby Gone, The Town and Argo. Three very strong films.

This year clearly isn't going to be his year, but I think his year will come.

The real issue is that 2012 had no standout film. How can their be a true front runner when no movie left a lasting impression? Argo is doing well with critics because it's a celebration of Hollywood. Initially, it was thought that industry awards would honor Argo for those same reasons, which is still possible, but the combination of Ben Affleck as director and George Clooney as producer is too much to handle in a competitive business. If Lincoln wins the top prize at the Oscars it'll be by default and not because it did anything special.

Last night's Golden Globes, hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, had the highest ratings for a Globe ceremony since 2007. Either these two will return next year OR the Oscars are gonna steal them away. The pressure is now on for Seth MacFarlane to top them.
