Really? Well in that case, consider my criticism retracted.

10. Jurassic Park (1993)
![]() This is an odd choice, perhaps. I think I love it because of the flare lens flare. 9. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) ![]() I didn't originally intend to have this one so high, as I felt it was more iconic than great. Then I deicded it was great. 8. Schindler's List (1993) ![]() Again, we return to Auschwitz. This is a frame from the first shot of the scene. It's the lighthouse type light on top and the light from the train that really get me. 7. Munich (2005) ![]() Now here's a real treat, and one that's pointless without context. This is from the very last scene of the movie in about 1975. In a nutshell, Avner has just had a discussion about the future of terrorism with Ephraim, and as he leaves not only do we see the World Trade Center (which coincidentally has recently been completed) but Avner glaces over at it as shown in the this shot. It gives me goosebumps every time and it's unlike any shot I can think of in a movie. 6. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) ![]() 5. Empire of the Sun (1987) ![]() I have only recently fallen in love with this shot. The color and lighting are so amazing. 4. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) ![]() I decided a freeze frame had to include the guy, so some of the boxes in the distance are missing. I'll include the other shot in the "alternatives." 3. Jurassic Park (1993) ![]() And here we have the shot that inspired me to collect Spielberg stills (or perhaps just my favorite stills from movies) as many as 5 years ago. 2. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) ![]() 1. War of the Worlds (2005)

Awesome list. That would have been a lot of work putting together. I thought you'd have that War of Worlds shot, but having it as #1 surprised me. That is definitely the most striking moment of that movie.

Very noticeable lack of Kate Capshaw, Short Round, and Snake Surprise.

Top 30 Spielberg Film Scenes
30. Quint tells of the Indianapolis – Jaws (1975) ![]() No better way to start off the list but with a scene about telling a story. But it's a perfect mood setter for the shark that's on his way. 29. Final battle – Empire of the Sun (1989) ![]() Great cinematography. 28. Mine cart chase – Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) ![]() A bit dopey, but the whole movie is a bit dopey. The movie and scene are also both a lot of fun. 27. Toy dogfight/Japanese camp – Empire of the Sun ![]() There's this odd scene where Bale throws a toy aircraft into the wind and uses an old fighter to pretend to get in a dogfight with the toy. He then loses it over a hill and finds a hidden Japanese camp, making his game suddenly very real. 26. Opening truck/car chase – Duel (1971) ![]() Unfortunately, the movie never quite lives up to this initial scene. Very well shot, especially considering it has no dialogue and is about a truck chasing a car. 25. Boats in Venice – Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) ![]() Some great action in this scene which combines with comedy ("Go between them, are you crazy?!") with suspense (as in the final fist fight near the propellers.) Much like the whole movie does. 24. Chasing the Ark – Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) ![]() Great mix of a car chase and fist fighting. 23. Bike chase – E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) ![]() Who would have thought this would work out so well? Wonderfully unique. 22. Interrogation and escape – Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) ![]() Again, a great mix of suspense, action and comedy. ("I liked the Austrian way better.") 21. E.T. and Elliott fly – E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) ![]() I'll admit it, it warms my heart. Great mix of fantasy and music.

I know it's probably a long shot to show up on your list, but here's my favorite scene from E.T., maybe my favorite Spielberg film:

That one moved around my list, once being as high as #12. I dunno, it's good, but in an average movie it wouldn't be.

Ugh, I thought I posted the next 10 and yet they're not there. I must have pushed the wrong button or something. I'll finish up the list tomorrow.

War of the Worlds is seriously under-rated. People should get over the fact that the aliens died from a flu virus.

It has nothing to do with the flu virus though. I was a microbiologist at the time and loved that idea. |
