I was amazed at how well Empire of the Sun was shot when I went through it again. (It was only the second time I had seen it.)

40. Schindler's List (1993)

This is one that's great only in context. It is a shot of the Jews decending a staircase in Auschwitz. Pretty obvious and strong symbolism.

39. War of the Worlds (2005)

This didn't come out as well as a freeze frame as I had hoped.

38. Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Niether did this one, but it's still pretty cool and everyone can visualize it better on their own, I should hope.

37. Schindler's List (1993)

Again, context needed and perhaps even then this will seem like a puzzling choice. It's a smokestack at Auschwitz. It looks like it's snowing, but it's ash. Like many other shots in this scene, I'm knocked out by the strong black/white contrast. This shot really exemplifies that contrast in both the smoke and the ash against the night sky.

36. Empire of the Sun (1987)

And what's funny about this is there's an amazing display behind him and he instead wants to watch a couple have sex.

I love this shot because it's the only good look we get of the shark until the very ending. What we get is a steadly gliding open mouth right towards the legs of this poor guy.

31. The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

This also didn't come out so well as a freeze frame. But I love this shot (and scene) of her hanging above the ocean from so high up with only a piece of glass protecting her. (Oddly enough, this is the second time in the movies where a piece of glass was all that was protecting someone from instant death.)

I actually like the original shot much better, but it seemed wrong not to show one with the mother ship.

This one isn't just about the shark and Quint, but more about that moment when Quint puts his foot up on his nose. I always thought that was a great touch. He's doing whatever he can not to go into the mouth, even if that means making contact with other, less deadly parts.

Looking at this one again I now realize this one is very rooted into the context of that great moment when the T-Rex breaks through. Still: dinosaur.

This is the last shot of the movie after we've seen all the Schinlder's list survivors and their acting counterparts visiting the real Schindler's grave. The last shot is of Liam Neeson paying his respects to his own counterpart.

22. A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)

21. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

This shot is much better on the big screen. I always thought it was a moment of brilliance to show this alien humbled by nothing other than the giant redwoods of Earth. Most movies about aliens are about trying to make them appear as menacing and dominate as possible. This shot is the complete opposite to show us a fragile, abandoned alien.

I own half of the Spielberg films on DVD and rented the other half on DVD from Netflix. I also had to rent Minority Report because I only have it on blu-ray.

I thought this would end up being in the top 5, but I guess I've been a bit dissuaded by how it comes out as a single shot (as opposed to how awesome the moment is in the movie when they come over the hill and start zapping everyone.) Nevertheless, seeing such carnage in an extreme long shot is pretty amazing. (Also, the rain makes freeze frames hard to see)

Something about the fog and the color in this one helps make it stunning. I could have this frame up on my wall.

The context is an important factor in this one. The movie takes place during the war but this isn't Saving Private Ryan; the war doesn't come into it too much. But to see the moment the war ended (in a sense) by the actual atomic blast at Hiroshima in the background when we weren't really thinking about it at the time is a moment of brilliance (no pun intended).

I've never been fond of the red dress. Seems a cheap trick to grab audience sympathies, which is unnecessary in a film about the holocaust.

The girl in the red dress is based on what Oskar Schindler recalls the most about that moment. That's why Spielberg included it.
