So I haven’t been sitting around watching tv for the past 6 months, I’ve actually been going to the movies, I just haven’t gone into the review threads and spoken my peace. Instead I’ll just throw in a few sentences about what I’ve seen the past few months.

Looper:

I liked this movie, I just didn’t love it like many people did. It was a cool watch and made for fun discussion about the time continuity, what if A happened so B could occur and all that. The action was also pretty hardcore which I dig. Where I got lost was the telekinetic(?) super power that some people have that seems very convenient given what the movie is trying to convey. I know a movie with time travel isn’t supposed to be super serious but the telekinesis was hard to swallow. Aside from the action and suspense there wasn’t a whole lot that I took away from this one.

B so says Doomsday

End of Watch:

Perhaps my favorite movie of this bunch. I was never a fan of Jake Gyllenhal but this movie sold me on him. What got me was that I never bought him as a tough guy, action star type, but this shows that he really did get into character as an LAPD officer. The best parts of the movie by far are the long beat patrols by the two cops, only getting sidetracked when attempting to inject an actual story. Fortunately there isn’t too much of that. Great, powerful performances mixed in with intensity and drama make this a genuinely gritty, strong police drama.

A so says Doomsday

The Master:

A performance driven film if there ever was one. Unfortunately I think the academy will mostly pass on this guy since I don’t recall it being extremely popular among filmgoers. Still, it’s not every day you find a movie this interesting. The plot is the character growth, both PSH’s character and Joaquin’s. Seeing them grow together and grow apart while battling their own separate demons is something that I don’t think very many filmmakers, if any, would be able to capture as well as Anderson. As I enjoyed it, I just can’t seem to find any interest in watching it again and it’s hard to distance my enjoyment of a film from it’s rewatchability.

But like I said in the thread, it had old woman boobs so I can’t give it anything higher than an F. Rules of the game.

The Campaign:

A needless movie. Derivative, unoriginal, every joke a rehash. Nothing new or fresh or something worth adding to the resumes of either actor. Yes there were a couple parts I chuckled at but it was dumb, hardly worth the time I spent watching it since I didn’t pay to see it.

C- so says Doomsday, if only for Zach Galifianakis’ one liners scattered throughout the film.

The Hobbit:

Not much has been said about the movie that I don’t agree with and I sit in between most people who either loved it or hated it. I thought it was just pretty good, nowhere near the heights of The Two Towers (my personal fav of LOTR), not even close. I see absolutely no need for this to be made into 3 movies when a solid hour could have been cut from the first installment. It’s not every day where I’ll doze off in a movie (I won’t go see movies when I have a massive hangover or have an all nighter under my belt or anything like that) but I did find myself head bobbing a couple times, especially at that Radagast sequence (absolutely no reason that had to be included). However once they get to Rivendell is when the film picks up. The Goblin kingdom was goofy and tried too hard to be comic while imitating the mines of Moria from FOTR, but it was still fun to watch. I could pretend to act cool and try not to care, but I know I’ll be shelling out my bucks to see the other two no matter how weak they are in comparison to LOTR. Hopefully it takes it up a notch and, with any luck, they revert back to 2 movies instead of a needless 3. Hope springs eternal.

B so says Doomsday

Moonrise Kingdom:

From the CS! Film Club
Moonrise Kingdom

Love conquers all might be one of the better yet more cliche taglines for Wes Anderson's latest quirky comedy about adolescent love and angst.

From the first shot of the film you know this is a Wes Anderson film. With his stock company cast down to his Mark Mothersbaugh music (Doomsday aside: I remember seeing Mark Mothersbaugh's name on the Rugrats credits every time I watched an episode as a kid and it blew my mind when I saw he did movies!) It's not a bad thing, I rank Bottle Rocket, Rushmore and Royal Tenenbaums all as some of my favorite movies from the past 15 years. Does this movie rank with those? No, but there's still much to enjoy. Some of the best parts of the Royal Tenenbaums were watching Ben Stiller interact with his detached children. Now imagine a whole movie of that. The movie shows Sam, a 'Khaki Scout' who escapes his island summer camp and meeting up with Suzy, a girl he met at a school play a year earlier. Suzy's family and the Khaki Scout troop conduct a sweep of the island until they're found. They're separated and are told never to see each other again, but they escape amidst a howling storm with the police, scouts, and social services on their tail. It's certainly an enjoyable movie with staple Anderson quirks. There are many laugh out loud moments and it's fun watching the film play out the way it does. Bruce Willis and Edward Norton are the highlights of the film and the supporting cast does a good job too.

I was thrown with mixed emotions though. When watching a romance movie or even romantic scene, if done appropriately the audience feels moved as they feel how the characters must feel. The passion reaches a climax (no pun) as the two twelve year olds dance on a beach and kiss for the first time. How cute. Then they talk about French kissing. Hm, well ok. Sam then starts to feel her up. Alright, now I'm feeling uncomfortable when I should be turned on. I also wasn't sure what Sam was refering to after the first time they tried to French. He states 'it's hard.' Was he refering to French kissing, which really isn't hard at all? Or...something else? I'm unsure if Anderson was going for the discomfort zone or what, but I was a little weirded out. The pacing of the movie also hurt the final product. The first act involving Boy Scout escape and evasion techniques was funny and enjoyable with lots of standard Anderson one-liners (Day one of the search: Morale is extremely low). Then as the movie shift gears, it slows considerably with a few unnecessary plot twists (the affair, getting struck by lightning come to mind). But as in all his movies Anderson manages to wrap it all up in a nice and fulfilling conclusion.

Not the best Anderson has to offer but it was an enjoyable movie all around. Will I pick it up on dvd anytime soon? Probably not, but I'm sure I'll watch it again down the road.

B so says Doomsday

Lawless:

I was really looking forward to this, mostly because Hillcoat’s two previous efforts were excellent with The Proposition being one of my favorite movies of the past decade. This however was a mess. Nothing really flowed and events transpired with no connection to the story. Characters came and went with no depth or involvement. I even felt that most of the main actors were miscast. I did admire what it was setting out to do and it was certainly no failure. It was brutal and had its share of action as I have come to expect from this filmmaker, but it was also hard to engage and was anticlimactic. The Proposition and The Road were good because they were focused and extremely intense. This movie was neither.

C+ so says Doomsday

Skyfall:

I’m a huge Bond fan, although I don’t post about it as much as Neverending or Jibbs. That said I don’t think a lot of people distinguish between ‘movies’ and ‘Bond movies.’ For some reason or another a lot of people find Goldfinger or From Russia, With Love to be sacrosanct in film canon. In comparison to other Bond films, yes they’re on the top tier but they’re formulaic and frankly aren’t that great of ‘films.’ Movies like Casino Royale and Skyfall bridge that gap between good ‘Bond movies’ and all around good ‘movies.’ Skyfall certainly ranks among the top of Bond films, yes even above most if not all of the Connery ones much like Casino Royale.

Also, I was always a vocal defender of Quantum of Solace, however it took Skyfall to point out how egregious the errors in QoS really are. Probably because I thought there would be a connection between the two, but no.

A- so says Doomsday

Argo:

Another movie that I enjoyed but didn’t love. The beginning was great and the end was very suspenseful, but the middle was fun at best and predictable at worst (although there are far worse things a movie can be than predictable). Yes, I know it’s a true story but when you can see where the film is moving at almost any given time it doesn’t lend itself to much intensity. However I do admire films like these that revel in their simpl[b]icity.I do think it’s another very solid effort for Affleck and believe he’s going to quickly distinguish himself among the actors who are better directors than actors (Affleck, Mel Gibson, Kevin Costner and so forth). While I don’t think it’s the best movie of the year like some people say, it’s certainly one of the better ones.

Because of me, because I fight. For you. One day, I will win."
