Hey, JBond, do I have to read all three books in Vernor Vinge's Zones of Thought series? Are they all related?

A Fire Upon the Deep (Book 1) and Deepness in the Sky (Book 2) have almost nothing in common. I think there's a brief reference to a similar character. Some captain. Anyway, I wouldn't worry about the order, or reading them both. I haven't read the third book, it's very new, so I couldn't tell you. (BTW, Deepness in the Sky is one of my favorites. Other one's pretty good, too.)
*Edit* According to wikipedia, the third book is a direct sequel to "A Fire Upon the Deep."

Tonight I am listening to a LibriVox recording of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.
LibriVox is a website that has volunteer readers read from Public Domain books and the downloads are free, They have a large collection of classics - I listened to the Oz books this way - I've never listened to the original text of this story before, but I have seen many versions of the movies and there's nothing quite like a Christmas ghost story

Yes, they're standalone.

I'm not that huge on any of those except for Spin, which is pretty great. (That's really only 12 years of books, though)

Actually, "Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell" is quite something, but I'd research it a bit to make sure it might be your kind of book. It's a bit dry and it's very long.

i can't believe both rothfuss and scalzi made the top of those respective lists. easily two of the worst books i read all year. and the road is maybe the most over rated book of our life time, from the most over rated author of our life time.
i grabbed strange and mr norrell on amazons daily deal for 2 bucks the other day actually, always see it cheap in physical form though. been looking for china mievilles books at my local half priced books for a while now, seems he is just too new/popular though.

Well I think affc is criminally under appreciated, haven't read Hp or hunger, so I cant comment but I get what you're saying. I guess 2000 was not counted or storm of swords would win, but fans wanted the series recognized.

They tended to make the better books into movies quicker than the not so great ones. So I would stick with the "Connery ones." From Russia With Love was my favorite, but keep in mind it's very James Bond lite. The Blofeld trilogy is pretty good, too.

Despite my book debt, I went on to buy three more books. I got a $20 voucher, after all. Got myself Ubik and A Scanner Darkly by Philip K. Dick and The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin.

I have 11 books to listen to at the moment - that's good because I have a very tight budget after Christmas for a few days.

I'm not sure what to read next. Hmm.
