Call me crazy but...what's so bad about Superman Returns? I rewatched it today (got a Superman, Superman II Richard Donner Cut, and Superman Returns blu-ray for free) and while not a fantastic film it's certainly not this train wreck that people make it out to be. My only gripe would be the kid being Superman's son angle which was handled poorly in the context of the other films (Superman was a human being when he and Louis humped, not Kryptonian. Any way you slice it the kid should have no powers). And yeah there were some goofy or campy moments but there were also some really good scenes. Brandon Routh was also a solid Superman, too bad he was given the boot. I think it could have used some polish but they didn't have to ditch the whole franchise and hit the reset button afterwards. Besides, I really admire how they tied it inot the old films too. Shame.

Lex Luthor's scheme doesn't make sense. When I first heard of New Krypton I thought he was building a prison/grave for Superman. Instead, it's another real estate plan. Without a strong villain and a shortage of action scenes, you end up with an awkward Superman film where our hero knocked up Lois Lane, left the planet, and then returns to stalk her. Bryan Singer wasn't the right guy for Superman. He should have sticked with X-Men. Ironically, Brett Ratner's Superman with Matthew Bomer in the role, might have been more promising.

I do agree with you in a lot of ways, but at the same time the movie is so boring.

It is pretty slow at times I agree, but I think it's hard to put in a ton of action in a Superman movie. After all, he is....Superman.

And that's one thing I forgot that Neverending brought up, but yes Lex Luthor's scheme is pretty much exactly like Superman 1 in that he wants to create land, control it and all that stuff. They even recycle some of the dialogue from the first movie. Now that I can see having a problem with.

True, but I wasn't asking for a ton of action, I was just asking for more than barely any.

I mean what was there? Superman preventing a plane crash (how original) and some dude shooting Superman with a turret and then a pistol...how exciting.

There were good parts of Superman Returns. In fact, it might be the most introverted and thoughtful of the Superman films. But as an action movie, too? Not even close.

True, but I don't think the film works entirely as a drama. For all the thoughtful and introspective moments in Superman Returns, none of it comes close to in Donner's original film when, during Jonathan's funeral, Clark says, "All those things I can do. All those powers. And I couldn't even save him." Nothing in Superman Returns is nearly as moving as that.

i actually was watching the first superman the other day, that single shot in the daily planet about 45 minutes in is one of the most impressive single shots i have ever seen.

Also about Superman Returns: Lois Lane, as played by Kate Bosworth, comes off as too *****y. The point could be made that she had a right to be, considering how Superman knocked her up and left the planet for a few years, but it's still hard to care about her when she comes off like that.

Another thing...the "new planet" that Lex Luthor was trying to create seemed incredibly uninhabitable.

The Richard Donner Cut is a bit misleading. It's just a presentation of what his version could have been. Since he never finished shooting the movie, there is no "Donner Cut" per say. I think WB could have used the opportunity to release the infamous International Cut from 1980 which is, by far, the superior version. The Donner and Lester footage is split 50/50 and, considering the circumstances, that's the best way to present the film.
