Star Wars: Ewan McGregor Wants To Reprise Obi-Wan Kenobi Role In Episode VII

Cue the blue Jedi ghost! Another former "Star Wars" actor is throwing his hat in the ring for "Episode VII."

Access Hollywood caught up with Ewan McGregor at the junket for his latest movie, "The Impossible," where he weighed in on dusting off his lightsaber to play Obi-Wan Kenobi again.

"Yeah, sure... absolutely," he told Access when asked about playing the Jedi role again, first played by Alec Guinness in the first three "Star Wars" movies.

Obi-Wan dies at the end of the "Episode IV," but is seen (and heard) as a ghostly figure in "Episode V" and "Episode VI," and could conceivably return in an ethereal form again in the upcoming movies.

"If they need me, I'll be there," Ewan added.

According to Ewan, George Lucas' role as creative consultant in the upcoming movies will be extremely limited.

"Lucas let me know that he was selling ['Star Wars'] the day before it was released to press and then he told me they were going to make the last three stories," the actor explained.

"And then I met him recently and asked him if he was going to be involved in them at all and he said, he'd given them the storylines for the last three, which he always planned to do, but he was never going to make them," Ewan told Access. "Because he felt like that would be his life's work and he wanted to do other things."

"Star Wars: Episode VII" is slated for theatrical release in 2015. "The Impossible" with Naomi Watts debuts in theaters on December 21.

The "Avengers" star's schedule is swamped -- he has three films currently in production - but when asked if he'd like to return for "Episode VII," the actor gave an enthusiastic "Hell yeah!"

"I can come back as one-armed or a one-handed Jedi that's still around that didn't actually die," he said. "I could do that or be a ghost hologram. I don't care!"

Adding, "I just want to stay associated with the franchise. Not that I won't, because I've been in three of them."
As for why the actor is drawn to the sci-fi world, Sam said he loves the concept of life in other in galaxies far, far away.

"I just always loved it. I always loved the idea of it, that there's this whole civilization out there somewhere else that's just as much fun and different and diverse and wild as we are," he said.

Sorry Sam, but Mace Windu isn't important enough to come back as a ghost. No one wants to see a stern boring bureaucrat.

Although it might be funny if Luke creates a new Jedi temple and Mace Windu's ghost comes in to annoy him and tell him how things were better back in the day and how he's doing it wrong because they aren't supposed to be allowed to have feelings.

How do you know his species doesn't live for like a million years or something. Maybe his midichlorian count was so high he has a half life of like 10,000 years. Or maybe he was another clone of... something-or-other. Then again, when he came charging out for the arena battle scene in AOTC he looked like someone just pulled his walker out from underneath him. He swung his light saber like John McCain trying to play Badminton. It was pretty sad. Nevermind, just let him stay dead.

Would putting Mace Windu in Star Wars VII make more or less sense than C3PO being a droid created by Anakin?

Or having R2 roll through the sand when we learned in Episode III that he could have flown and used his flame thrower on the Jawas. Who knew?

"I have no immediate update, but hopefully in January I’ll have something that I can say." It's quite possible that January will be when we'll finally have a director announcement. Additionally, she confirmed that pre-production will begin sometime in the Spring of 2013. While it was already announced that pre-production was beginning with the signing of screenwriter Michael Ardnt (Toy Story 3), ComicBook.com assume that set construction is the pre-production that will begin in the Spring. Star Wars: Episode VII is currently targeting a 2015 release.
