He went a little beyond being a horrible racist -- choked out a black groundskeeper, and when his wife tried to intervene, he knocked her around too. He marched in to the stands during a game and beat the crap out of a dude who was missing both arms (or maybe it was both legs...either way, dude was crippled). I think he also stabbed a black elevator attendant for being "uppity" or something like that. He passed beyond racism in to the realm of "blithering psychopath" on more than one occasion. I've always had an idea for a baseball movie where some minor league baseball player is haunted/followed by the ghost of Ty Cobb. I imagine it as an insanely dark version of Angels in the Outfield.

Or, maybe have his introduction be Field Of Dreams-style where he walks out of the cornfield and instead of being nice & humble like Shoeless Joe Jackson, he proceeds to beat the crap out of Kevin Costner with his bat. I'm sure quite a few people would love to see that happen to Costner.

I haven't watched Field of Dreams in years. I love it, even if I can't stand Kevin Costner. And if I remember my baseball lore correctly, Shoeless Joe & Cobb were actually really good buddies in real-life, even if Cobb never missed an opportunity to mock the fact that Shoeless Joe was illiterate/be his normal, hateful self. It's amazing that someone like Ty Cobb could even have friends. Friendship just didn't suit him that well. I have no idea how to write that Ty Cobb/Angels in The Outfield screenplay because I don't know what exactly the movie would even be about besides putting a spotlight on a horribly cruel individual for two hours. Why would Ty Cobb help a minor league baseball player? He would rather smack him with a sharpened cleat than help him.

And here's a debate while we await opening day: greatest baseball movie ever? My personal favorite is The Natural, with The Pride of The Yankees coming in second.

God could force him to do it if he wants to stay in heaven. Or better yet, the baseball god. Plently of joke opportunities if you create a baseball god (Red Sox, Cubs, etc.) Actually, I've toyed with the idea of a baseball screenplay myself. I was thinking of a time traveler who becomes the world's greatest ballplayer because he knows what the pitcher is goign to pitch. The problem being of course time travel wouldn't help him that much. He'd have to have pitch by pitch updates bases on his swings and whatnot and it's gets too complicated too fast. But just like your problem...what would the movie be about anyway?

As for baseball movies, I have an odd choice in Moneyball as my favorite. I don't really care for Field of Dreams. The Natural is pretty good. I considered making a top ten baseball movies list, once...

Come to think of it, it would make a loooot more sense to make him a psychic. I just prefer science fiction to supernatural stuff. Has that ever been done before?

Though I would no longer have an excuse to have it take place in the 60s or something.

I've been working on this for a while now, it's a timetable of the history of Major League Baseball. Every team that was ever considered a part of th "MLB" is in here going back to 1871. It's main purpose is to show the evolution of the leagues, divisions, and locations of teams. (Teams are arranged by geographic location. (Top to bottom - west to east. Seperate for both the NL and AL)

"WSC" means they were the World Series champs that year.

I have a mini version here to give you an idea and a LARGE photo that I'll place in spoiler tags to allow people decide if they want a 8300 pixel long picture on this page.

Tell me what you think and if I should make any changes.

How is it that the Blue Jays are now involved in R. A. Dickey and Jason Grilli? Toronto went from a no one on the trade front to big time player all of the suddent. Pretty cool if we could pick both of them up. Need to solidify the bullpen.

No comments on the Royals/Rays trade? James Shields and Wade Davis to KC really helps out their rotation. Too bad they gave up a top 5 prospect in OF Wil Myers, a potential mid rotation starter in RHP Jake Odorizzi, a former big time prospect in LHP Mike Montgomery, and a solid 3B prospect. Their heart was in the right place but jeez.

The Rays continue to be an incredibly run organization.
