I'm actually hoping that means they have more confidence in the film, and/or want extra time polishing it up.

Most movies that only have one or two things that can go wrong usually do. This movie has about 5 or 6.

Child actors is the primary reason it's taken so long to bring this particular adaptation to the silver screen. The number of child actors capable of delivering a performance any more advanced that what is called for in a sitcom is generally extremely limited. Working with an all child cast calls for an incredibly patient and experienced director, like Chris Columbus, who has already done it with the first two Harry Potter movies. Instead, we've got Gavin Hood, the guy who directed X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

That would be funny, but no. If Gavin Hood were to behave as abusively towards child actors as Russel does with experienced adult actors, he would likely be fired. The various on-set parents would join forces to have him removed.
