Running time is 2 hrs and 50 mins. That's pretty short for LOTR standards but it will still lead to sore butts. Everybody will be sitting down for over 3 hours. There should be an intermission.

That's actually the same running time as FOTR's theatrical version, which clocks in at 178 minutes.

Fellowship of the Ring is one story. An Unexpected Journey is like 30% of a story. There's no reason for it to be nearly 3 hours long. I fear that these Hobbit films will suffer from King Kong syndrome.

All these speculations are moot until the 14th.

So, everyone, which format are you guys going to watch? I'm conflicted between Digital 2D, Digital 3D, Digital 3D with HFR and IMAX Digital 3D with HFR. As a first viewing, I'm not sure if I really want the 3D and/or the HFR. Does that sound very crazy? What are you guys gonna pick?

I'm not sure of any theaters that will play it in HFR without 3D. Seeing HFR without it would seem kind of odd anyway, as the 3D is the main reason the movies are being shot in 48fps. IMAX originally wasn't going to play it in HFR, but a select number of digital IMAX locations are now showing it as such. Make sure your theater is playing it that way, and if they're showing both options that you select the right times for one or the other.

I plan to see it first in IMAX 3D (non-HFR), and then in HFR 3D, so as to have an immediate comparison in how much it supposedly enhances it.

That's the problem, though. I'd love to watch it in IMAX 3D without HFR. But it seems like I have to choose between IMAX 3D with HFR, or 3D with HFR or just 3D.

As Fanible said, the whole purpose of 48fps is to enhance 3D, and since I could care less about 3D, I'll just watch it in regular ol' 2D.

A movie experiance is what and why I go. But I guess if people want to watch bootlegs to cheapen there experiance i suppose its there right.

A lot of people are "surprised" we're getting a new trilogy. These are the same folks who thought making two movies was a bit of a stretch. The Hobbit is a simple children's story in comparison to the literary masterpiece that is LOTR. So, if each installment is 3 hours OR LONGER, that's gonna raise a few eyebrows. King Kong got major criticism for its running time. So... I think we should brace ourselves. I can already see this becoming an issue.

The ONLY theatre showing the movie in IMAX 3D with HFR has yet to release its tickets. Well, one has, but that one is on the other side of the country. I have read Twitter reviews from people who attended the premier (no embargoes on those), and they ALL seem super optimistic about this movie. I really won't worry about the movie.

The premiere was in New Zealand. They're not gonna badmouth the film. I expect reaction to be more diverse upon its worldwide release. I mean... everyone enjoyed Return of the King but everyone also had a lot to say about the movie's 50 endings.
