It's symbolic. It's fine.

Didn't you watch the series on TV also one of the movies also mentioned how the apes took over. However, they did change it a bit. It was stated that that a great disease killed off all of the cats & dogs.

Twentieth Century Fox Film is moving forward with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for a May 23, 2014 release, but Rise of the Planet of the Apes star James Franco tells MTV that he hasn't heard anything lately from the production.

"I was going to be a small part of the next one," he said. "There was a moment when Rupert Wyatt was going to direct the second one. A lot of the human characters that were in the first movie were dead in the sequel that Rupert was going to direct. But there was one scene, between Caesar and my character, maybe even just like on a video that was left behind, but then a lot of things happened, like [former Fox co-chairman] Tom Rothman who was a big part of the first movie, left. Now Rupert's not a part of it so I don't know. My guess is I won't be in it. Nobody's talked to me since Rupert left."

Cloverfield and Let Me In helmer Matt Reeves is now directing Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for the studio. The first film, released in 2011, earned $481.8 million at the worldwide box office.

Not having a Franco cameo seems like a lost opportunity. Many things could be done with it.

I agree. Franco should be in it.

If an appearance by Franco would genuinely add to the story, he should be included. If his presence were merely to be shoehorned into the tale to maintain a human string of continuity between the two films, then they shouldn't bother.

I heard that too; as the leader of the Human Colony. Which kind of explains how long after the first, this one will be.

The synopsis saying "15 years later" does that pretty well too.
