Default 3D Movie Discussion

Hey guys, I know there have already been some 3D threads, but they're really hard to search for since 3D is too short to show up in search.

I wanted to see if we could bring up the discussion of whether or not 3D surcharges help or hurt the industry. Do you think they are discouraging people from the theater, or are they in fact raising box office grosses.

Most theaters have probably had 3D projectors for 3 years now. Surely the projectors are paid off by now. So should they still have the surcharge?

For serious movie goers, I don't think that 3D is a factor. It does nothing to enhance the story. Im a grown up, at least I think I am. Therefore, i know nothing is going to hit me or grab me coming out of the screen. I think 3D hurts the industry.

Prime example- Christopher Nolan didn't even waist time doing that crap to Dark Knight Rises.

It depends on the film. Avatar and The Avengers benefitted from it. The Hobbit was likely benefit from it too. In general, I think people could care less, but with certain films they definitely respond to it.

So, in a way, it's probably helping more than hurting. Theater attendance has been down since the 21st century began, long before the 3D craze, so the extra cash helps a lot.

I am not a huge fan of 3-D movies. The technology has improved greatly from the anaglyph technology that was popular (read cheaper) when I was a kid. I can tolerate the experience if the movie was actually shot in 3-D, and the imagery looks clean and the colors pop. Post filming conversion suuuuuuuuucks! If anyone watched Clash of the Titans in 3-D, you know what i am talking about. Muted colors, distortion and strange artifacts were a result of the post filming conversion process.

If you are going to make a 3-D movie, film it in 3-D for the love of Cheez-Its!

I saw Ice Age in 3D as well, it was a much better viewing experience for me with bad eyes than a normal movie in 3D - think the colours and such were better for me
